GOOGLE BOOKS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE:

Why books will always be popular - By: Ryan Fyfe

Technology continues to bring changes to our lives and many objects that people once placed great value in are being consigned to history. This has led people to speculate that the traditional type of book will be replaced by an electronic version; they point to the record industry as evidence to what will happen to books. Other people feel certain that the format of the book will also be completely revised because people no longer have the attention span to be wading through long narrative; they want something short and zappy. One other claim is that the future type of book will not be a static entity, but instead something that is constantly evolving with readers being able to interact with the text and the author constantly changing it to keep it up to date. These arguments do make a lot of sense, but here is why I feel certain that in some ways they are wrong; are at least not completely correct.

People frequently compare the traditional paper book to the record industry. To me this does not seem like a fair comparison because they are different in many ways. For one thing the book has been around a lot longer than recorded music. Humans have been enjoying books for many centuries while recorded sound is only just only been popular for over a hundred years or so. Recorded music has evolved rapidly during its history with different types of vinyl records leading to cassettes which developed to CDs and eventually to MP3s. People did become fond of different formats, but they were still having the same sort of listening experience only that it came with improvements. This is different than books because most readers claim that every attempt to develop an electronic reading device has always took away from the experience; people read electronic books for connivance and not because they offer a better way of reading. The big changes that have occurred with music have not happened with books and they don't really seem like to. The electronic book will become more popular, but it is unlikely to replace paper for many more years.

The next argument is that people want something much shorter that the traditional 60,000 to 120,000 word book. The reality is that there have always been some people who liked the short story over long narration. These days less people choose short stories and people now expect books to be longer; the average word count for a book was once about 60,000 but nowadays people feel shortchanged if it is anything less than 100,000.

The idea of the interactive book becoming more popular probably does have a lot of truth in it. New technology like Google Wave might herald some really exciting times ahead with readers being able to interact more with the story. These types of new technology will likely bring many new enjoyable ways of doing things, but they will likely just be a different way of reading rather than replacing the traditional book.

Pastors - the time to write your book is now! - By: Brian Mast

All pastors have a book, or two, inside of them! If you have a book that is crying out to be written, but you are too busy or overwhelmed at the prospect of writing a book, we can help.

Over the past 10 years, I have had the honor of helping write, edit, publish, and/or market almost 100 books with more than 1.6 million copies in print. Many of these authors have been pastors and ministry leaders … and most of them had never written a book before!

It is incredibly satisfying to see one of "my" author's books make an impact in someone's life. Here are a few examples:

One book I helped an author write on the subject of forgiveness happened to be given to a married couple in the process of getting divorced. After reading the book, they decided to forgive each other and make their marriage work!

Another book happened to find its way into the hands of an athlete who came to know Jesus as a result.

One author's book, entitled My Work Is My Ministry, has made such an impact that businessmen by the hundreds are asking for his book.

On a personal note, I grew up as a missionary kid overseas and spent several years after high school in mission work before going to college, but I have found that through books I have been able to influence lives in countless languages and countries! I've been to China, Indonesia, Brazil, Argentina, France, and Germany, but my books in the languages of these countries are making more of an impact than I ever did.

In your vocation, you have the unique opportunity to reach out to people who are hurting and looking for the answers. In fact, it is Jesus' calling to us: "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation." What better way to reach out to the world with the hopeful message of Christ than through a book?

Is there something that God has put on your heart to share with His people? Do you have a unique story to tell that would inspire others in their walk with Christ? Don't hesitate. It is time to do it.

It is wonderful, as I know you understand, to see a life changed and to see God work in someone's heart … and to know that you played a part.

With that in mind, it is my desire and passion to serve you in what you do. In the area of books, from production to publishing and from marketing to evangelism efforts, I am here to serve you.

It's Important for Book Authors to Have Their Own Websites - By: Phyllis Zimbler Miller

Many book authors decide that they can get enough exposure for their books by listing these books on various online book sites rather than having a dedicated website for their books.

Yet, if you are truly interested in giving your book the best online marketing opportunities, you need to have your own book author website.

To begin with, if you use social media networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to promote your book, you will want to include a URL link that sends people to a dedicated book author website to show that you are a serious book author.

You don't want to use a URL to a shared site where people can get distracted with the other books available and forget about checking out your book. This is especially true about Amazon - do not tell people they can find your book on Amazon. Give them the exact URL to the Amazon page with your book on it. (Because that URL is quite long, use a shortened URL site to create a shortened URL for your book's Amazon page.)

Second, you want to be able to offer a sample chapter on your site in order to entice potential purchasers to buy the entire book. This sample chapter can also be used to encourage people to give you their name and email address by using an email opt-in function.

If you have this email information, you can keep yourself in front of people who might not have bought your book the first time they visited your site. Now you can send out emails that provides news of your book and your next book.

Being able to include book club discussion questions is another reason for having your own book author website. Plus you can also include book videos and book audios.

Then there's the advantage of having your blog on your book author website. With the constant addition of fresh material, you make the search engines happy with your site. The result of this is to help your website come up higher in the organic search results when someone is looking for a book related to the topic of your book.

Of course, you can add your own book signings and book event dates to let your fans know when and where they can meet you in person. And you can add book reviews and testimonials to encourage potential purchasers.

The bottom line is that, if you have your own book author website and you can control it yourself, you can greatly increase your online marketing opportunities.

How To Have a Fantastic Book Club Discussion - By: Alice Osborn

I love reading books and have been a book club participant for over seven years. If you are like me and after you finish a good book you research it online to find out all I can about the author, his/her creative process and perhaps the historical background of the book. What's even better is taking this analysis to a book club meeting.

Here there are other people who are just as passionate about the book as you are. For the next 90 to 120 minutes, you can discuss a single piece of artistic work and really try to drill down the layers of why the author did this and that or why she chose to make her character act like an idiot or a hero.

In the last decade many people (mostly women) have flocked to book clubs to enjoy camaraderie with other book lovers. I joined a book club soon seven years ago soon after my son was born because I had more time on my hands and I wanted to escape the tedium of diapers, feedings and nightly temper tantrums. This was also the same time that I wanted to get serious about my writing and knew that better readers made better writers.

Now seven years later, I have led two successful book club groups and have compiled this guide to help you lead a fantastic book club meeting!

- Distribute the reading discussion questions (most books have a reading guide found in the book itself or via Google) a week prior to the book club members so everyone has a chance to prepare - Offer some kind of food and beverage at every meeting. You can keep it simple and everyone will appreciate the water and cookies. Sugar makes you think better! - Appoint yourself as the facilitator to keep things moving or appoint the host if you rotate locations every month - Pick paperback books that are easily found in the library, at used book stores or via friends who let you borrow their books - Plan out the books for the entire year at a December or January meeting so there everyone knows what the schedule is - Have everyone introduce themselves at the beginning of the meeting for 30 seconds to a minute. Also provide name tags. - Do everything in your power to finish the book before the meeting. If you finish the book and encourage others that it's a good idea to finish, then most folks will comply. No one wants to stay up late, finish the darn book and then show up to the meeting to find out that half of the people there didn't finish. - Go around the room or table and let everyone have a turn to share their thoughts on the book. As facilitator, you also have to make sure no one interrupts each other and have personal discussions kept to a minimum. (Ex. "This book reminds of the time when my husband and I decided to sell our house back in the 60s....") - Keep an open mind and learn from others who have differing opinions. Listen! Also, try not to repeat what someone else has said - offer a new tidbit! Here are a few book club conversation starters from Reading Group Choices (www. ReadingGroupChoices.com) if you don't have the reading group guide on hand.

- Do one or more characters tell the story? Are these characters believable? - What are the book's themes? What the main conflicts in the story? - How does the setting and the time period affect the story? - Did the story change your opinion of a place, event, time period, etc? How so? - What do you think will happen to the characters next?

Planning a fantastic book club meeting doesn't take a lot of work since everyone there also wants the meeting to succeed, but it's your job as facilitator to set the right tone and let everyone have their say so they'll come back for more!

Online Retail: Sell Books Online - By: Henry Funk

You don’t have to be a book lover to benefit from making a living by selling books online. In fact, it’s so easy to do that you may never even have read a book in your life and you could still make a whole lot of money easily. In this article I explain why selling books online is so popular and give some advice for getting started with your own online book shop.

There are many advantages to selling books online, but working from home is one of my personal favourites! While everybody else is dragging themselves through the rush hour to work, I’m sitting in my dressing gown with some home-brewed coffee, conducting as much business as I like from the comfort of my own sofa! In fact, that’s one of the other great things about selling books online; it costs virtually nothing to start your business up and, once running, you have total control over the size of your business and the amount of time you spend running it. You could sell a couple of books per week to pay for a visit to the pub, or organise an online book empire! Even getting started in your quest to sell books is about as easy as it gets; you can start small and sell books you already own until you get a feel for it, then move on to bigger things if you want to. If you do decide to expand, you can find books all over the place for next to no money; charity shops, car boot sales, in the family attic – they’re all over the place and people will pay money for them!

The internet is, without a doubt, the best place to sell books; you have an immediate potential audience of millions – billions even! Once you’re up and running it’s easy sailing - the only tricky bit is getting people to come to your online book store rather than the others. Luckily, there are a few easy ways to make sure your book store is gets noticed. For starters, make sure you affiliate your book shop with a respectable online marketplace that can help you manage your inventory; these sites are exceptionally well built and offer fantastic search features, so people can find your books as easily as possible. Although you could try to set up your own website right away, this is an immediate and expensive overhead compared to the free hosting offered by some big online marketplaces. By all means, start your own site once you have found your feet but, to start with, it is definitely wise to make use of the experience and reputation of a respected ecommerce website. What’s more, they already have the systems in place to help you manage and organise your inventory and catalogue; even if you start with just a few books, you’ll need some help keeping track once your business grows!

Finally, when it comes to the business side of selling books online, remember knowledge is power. Always conduct as much research as you can into market trends and the businesses you are up against. Although selling books online is easy work, you do need to be savvy to outdo the competition; perhaps sell to a niche market, maybe specialise in local writers or even write your own e-books! You don’t have to do anything alternative to find your market, but you will need to make sure you stand out from the other vendors. Be creative and make sure you tell people why buying from you in the best thing they could do! With a little time and effort, anybody can succeed at selling books online.

7 Tips for Effective Internet Book Selling - By: Phyllis Zimbler Miller

Books have always been judged by their covers. In a bookstore you look at the cover first, then turn over the book to read the back cover. Or maybe you next read the inside front and back flap covers of a hardcover book.

Now, though, many of us judge a book by first seeing it on the Internet -- even if we ultimately buy the book in a bookstore using a 30% off coupon.

And on the Internet, especially on Amazon, the book cover is a tiny thing. And, yes, many books on Amazon have the LOOK INSIDE feature. Still, your book cover has nanoseconds to connect with a potential buyer before that person clicks away to another book.

Here are seven tips for a book cover that gets people interested in your book:

1. Decide on your book cover design by looking at it the exact size it will appear on Amazon. Yes. many books on Amazon have LOOK INSIDE. Still, your book cover has nanoseconds to convince someone to stay around and learn more.

2. Make sure your book cover clearly conveys what the book is about - is it a memoir, a novel, a computer guide? Yes, the title has the heavy lifting duty here, but our brains process pictures faster than words. Use the design cover to speak to our brains.

3. Make sure the title and your name can be clearly read against the cover art. Some books might, for example, use light blue type against a dark blue background. This is not the easiest to read, especially when reduced to a tiny photo.

4. Make sure the size of the title and your name are large enough to be read when reduced to a tiny photo. A great title does no good if it can't be read when reduced in size.

5. Choose simplicity over complexity. You want the eye to be drawn to the title and a photo that makes an impact on the brain. You don't want a cover with so many competing elements that the eye doesn't know where to look first -- so the person simply clicks away rather than suffer the confusion.

6. Graphic artists are not necessarily the best people to hire to design your book cover. There are specialists in book cover design who know the additional details that should be considered when designing a book cover.

7. Make sure the cover is in sync with the content of the book. No nude women on the cover of a how-to about growing roses in your garden. On the other hand, you don't necessarily have to have a rose on that book's cover. But the book's cover should have the look and feel that is complementary with the tone of the book.

Bonus tip: No matter how good the cover is, if your book is filled with grammatical errors, incorrect punctuation and spell-check errors (such as their for there), people will be disappointed with your book. If you're self-publishing, hire a professional copyeditor before you publish the book. Your reading public will thank you.

Book Trailers: They Can Be So Much More Than Wannabe Movie Trailers - By: Phyllis Zimbler Miller

Book trailers are popping up all over the Internet, promoting both fiction and nonfiction books. In most cases these book trailers are similar to movie trailers - sliced together footage of pictures and film clips, often with a voiceover.

Movie trailers probably work best when they include footage of a film star that we all want to see in a movie. We may not even care what the movie is about because the film looks like good entertainment and all that is required of us is to sit in a dark theater and watch the film.

Yet, when using book trailers to motivate people to buy books, we need to consider what we are asking these people to do. We are asking them to spend more money than the price of a movie ticket and work at reading the book because, yes, it is work to read a book even if you love reading.

And on top of that these book trailers don't have any film stars to entice us to the movie theater. There's usually not even the added bonus of the familiarity of a sequel.

Then should book authors abandon making book trailers? Should they focus their book marketing on other venues and leave the trailers to the film industry?

Hold on! Isn't there another way that uploading videos to YouTube and other free online video sites can be utilized to promote books?

Here's an alternative approach:

Book authors can make short videos (three minutes maximum) of topics in their nonfiction books and related subjects in their fiction books.

Let's imagine that Valerie has written the mystery "Jonas in Mexico City." In her mystery she features a great deal of the ancient and modern culture of that sprawling metropolis. What if she makes a short video on preparing a Mexican dish that her protagonist eats in the book?

The video should feature Valerie talking about the recipe and she should be entertaining and informative. At the end of the recipe description, she notes the protagonist in her book really likes this dish.

Doesn't this sound like a more interesting video that watching pictures and film clips of Mexico City while a voiceover talks about the plot of "Jonas in Mexico City"?

Now let's imagine Melvin has written the nonfiction book "Cacti of the American Southwest." Instead of a video describing what the book is about, what if Melvin is filmed in his cacti garden sharing fascinating tidbits about these plants. And at the end, of course, he mentions that, if you want to learn more, get a copy of his book "Cacti of the American Southwest."

These are only two examples of the kinds of "book trailers" that can get your creative juices flowing. If you're a writer, you should be able to come up with a series of videos that entertain, inform and pitch your book.

Leave the clips and voiceovers to movie trailers. You use the visual medium to provide your potential readers with information and at the same time create a potential bond with them.

Then upload your newest masterpieces to the Internet and who knows? Maybe your innovative book trailers will go viral.

Buying and Selling Books Online - By: Henry Funk

There are quite a number of different ways that people manage to make money online, but some things are far more successful than others. A lot of people buy and sell things, especially on auction sites. One of the most popular items amongst buyers and sellers is books. An awful lot of people love to read and, because of this, used books will always be bought and sold.

If you are a reader and you have a lot of titles that you do not want anymore, then you could be looking at getting yourself a good price for them. A lot of it will be dependent on what genre they are and the condition that they are in. Like anything else, if things are tatty then this will affect their overall value.

Of course, auction sites are not the only place to buy and sell books. There are plenty of other websites that are dedicated to trading in both hardbacks and paperbacks. These are also a wonderful place to find any titles that you are looking for. Out of the sites that come up from a search on Google will have a huge selection that is laid out in numerous categories. You have a far greater chance of finding a particular novel on the internet than you have by trudging around endless bookshops. It is also far quicker to read through lists online than it is to go through volumes on shelves.

Some online shops will specialise in a particular genre. Don’t be at all surprised to find websites that deal solely in science fiction or spiritual subjects. Whatever topic it is that you read most of, you can be pretty sure that you will come across an online bookshop that deals in exactly that.

Used books are the best place to look for any more unusual titles that you have been trying to lay your hands on. When you pore through the stores online you will see that there are all kinds of literary gems which are just waiting to be found by the right person. You can happily lose yourself for hours on end whilst you are scanning different lists of titles.

Most of the online stores will also have a huge selection of used books for children. There are a lot of people who collect children’s books as well. You do not have to be a parent to enjoy them; as many readers will tell you. However, if you do have a little one, then it is a great way to find some stocking-fillers for Christmas.

The different sections on these sites really are varied. You can pick up some wonderful cookery titles along with books about all kinds of different arts and crafts. If you are trying to find a workshop manual for a certain make and model of car, then you should not have to look for very long. Whatever subject it is that you are interested in you have an extremely good chance of finding exactly what you want.

......................................................................................What is the anatomy of thought? - A Book Review of Scientology: The Fundamentals of Thought, by L. Ron Hubbard - By: Nick Broadhurst

A tree is green, living, alive. It grows and bends in the wind. It is not alive. It is cut up and used as firewood and burned. What is the difference? Life. What is that? You are born, you live, and you die. We take it for granted. What really is this cycle? Why do we do that?

In his book, Scientology: The Fundamentals of thought, L. Ron Hubbard goes over what the life force is. He explains what is life. He explains what life is trying to accomplish.

“You may have been taught that the mind, spirit and life are very difficult things to know about. This is the first principle of Scientology: It is possible to know about the mind, the spirit and life.”

Here Scientology is presented as a definitive answer as to what life is, what is the meaning of life, which is something philosophers had been searching for, for tens of thousands of years

“Scientology does not teach you. It only reminds you. For the information was yours in the first place.”

Scientology means simply a study of knowledge. That knowledge is about life, what is life, how it works. Life is you. Scientology also appears to place emphasis on common sense, and getting the confusion of belief separated out from observable fact.

In Scientology: The Fundamentals of Thought there are several basic concepts that can help a person be less confused about life. This review will concentrate on only one of these concepts, and let you, the reader, judge the books from it, yourself.

Chapter seven is titled: The Parts of Man. Here is what L. Ron Hubbard states each person is.

“The individual man is divisible into three parts.

“The first is the spirit, called in Scientology the THETAN.

“The second of these parts is the MIND.

“The third of these parts in the BODY.”

“The greatest discovery of Scientology, and its most forceful contribution to the knowledge of Mankind, has been the isolation, description and handling of the human spirit. Accomplished in July 1952 in Phoenix, Arizona, I established along scientific lines rather than mere belief) that: The thing which is the person, the personality, is separable from the body and the mind at will and without causing bodily death or mental derangement.”

The spirit, or THETAN as described in Scientology, has “no mass, no wavelength, no energy and not time or location in space”. Mr. Hubbard says, “The spirit, then, is not a thing, it is a creator of things.”

Mr. Hubbard further writes, “the usual residence of the thetan is in the skull or near the body.” He then outlines the four conditions the thetan can be in and that the thetan is subject to deterioration and that by using Scientology processing, one can can reverse that deterioration. One of the many goals of Scientology is to “exteriorize” the individual, as this allows him to be happier and more capable, and in a better condition.

The MIND is written as being a communication and control system between the thetan and the environment. “A thetan establishes various systems of control so that he can continue to operate a body and, through the body, operate things in the physical universe as well as other bodies.” The book explains about the mental image pictures of the physical universe and that these pictures are used within the mind

L. Ron Hubbard found that there were in fact three minds, not just one. The minds are:

The ANALYTICAL MIND

The REACTIVE MIND

The SOMATIC MIND

The ANALYTICAL MIND “combines perceptions of the immediate environment, of the past (via pictures) and estimations of the future, into conclusions which are based upon the realities of situations.” When you are fresh, awake and alert, this mind should guide you to correct decisions.

The REACTIVE MIND is a stimulus-response mechanism. It is ruggedly built and never stops operating. The pictures are of a very low order. “The reactive mind operates blow the level of consciousness. It is the literal stimulus-response mind.” This mind is the subject of Dianetics entirely. It is this mind which records phrases spoken to an anaesthetised person that later affect him. During a time of unconsciousness the reactive mind registers stimuli which are later played back to the person when he is awake, impelling that person to perform irrational acts towards later similar stimuli. Here are hidden fears, anxieties, depressions, anger, hidden sources of irrational behaviour. Here is the source of mental illness.

The SOMATIC MIND is an even heavier type mind, “since it contains no 'thinkingness' and contains only 'actingness'.” Mr. Hubbard found, “The impulses placed against the body by the thetan, through various mental machinery, arrive at the voluntary, involuntary and glandular levels. These have set methods of analysis for any given situation and so respond directly to commands given.” This mind is subject to the higher minds. It brings on “psychosomatic” illnesses. Herein lie glandular problems, muscle problems, and bizarre pains in the body for which there is no physical illness. Here also are physical illnesses, manifesting, having been created by the higher minds through the somatic mind.

The BODY is the third part of man. This is best studied in anatomy books. Per the author, in Scientology the body is seen as purely structural.

“These three parts of Man – the thetan, the mind and the body – are each one different studies, but they influence each other markedly and continually. Of the three, the senior entity is the thetan. For without the thetan, there would be no mind or animation of the body. While without a body or a mind, there is still animation and life in the thetan.

The thetan is the person. You are YOU in a body.

Scientology: The Fundamentals of Thought also includes certain laws that govern life, as well as basic Scientology processes that unlock the life force that is you. They are all written in an easy-to-understand manner.

This book is definitely worth reading, if only to gain a fuller understanding of the parts of man.

The book costs $25 in large soft cover in Australia, plus postage. For anyone trying to gain a basic understanding of Scientology for the first time, this is the book to read. The mass media by contrast print myths. But ostensibly here is the story from the author himself, the man who started it, L. Ron Hubbard. One can order the book from any of the Churches of Scientology, or its publisher, Bridge Publications. One can also click onto the site below and order online, delivered to anywhere in Australia.

For anyone wanting a basic understanding of Scientology, first hand, this must be the first book to read.

Children Books makes learning a fun activity - By: Tom Lopez

With the ongoing process of learning starting at a very early stage of life, it is getting increasingly difficult for the young mothers to make their little ones learn their lessons. Also most mothers in the urban cities are working on a full time basis which gives them comparatively lesser time to devote to their children. On top of it highly energetic toddlers are on a run, for most of the time.

There is a solution to every problem and for this kind of problem; the solution is exciting brain works book Series for kids. These children books allure the young toddlers to go through them and create an interest through their big bold letters and colorful interesting pictures. Activity books are also included in this book-set of children books’ series to make the kids respond as well.

It is a human tendency that everyone gets bored of their daily routine after a particular period of time. Same holds true for kids as well. Kids are subjected to enormous study routine even after lengthy schooling hours. The outdoor entertainment facilities are also getting dearer due to lack of space and time. In such circumstances, the only solution is to provide the kids with huge book library based on their interest. This will not only inculcate a habit of learning in children but also increase their knowledge base.

Entertainment has become limited to television and movie theatres. In such cases all the parents should make a reading schedule for their kids involving mythical interesting story books. A reading corner for the whole family after lunch or dinner will certainly go a long way in enhancing kids’ knowledge and their aversion from television.

It’s not always that you can allure your little ones into reading. Then this becomes a daily routine for them. To avoid such issues, introduce some crafts’ series in their schedule and bring out their creative talent. It is not essential to sit and watch your kid and give your expert comments. It’s better to involve yourself into some other activity to keep a watch and not let your kid feel it too.

So introduce these books into your children’s lives and make learning a fun activity for them.

New Generation of e-Book Readers Contributes to Environmental Protection - By: Marco Gustafsson

From an environmental standpoint, introducing e-ink technology into home use, school curriculum, library facilities, and business use provides a win-win scenario with benefits to be had at all angles. Green reading reduces an individual’s literary carbon footprint intertwining human interaction and the planet’s lifespan together on a favorable level. Traditional reading involves a greater cost on so many levels including production, storage, transport, and disposal. Not only must one consider the cost of making and keeping the book, but one must also consider the getting rid of the book once it is no longer wanted.

Electronic Books as an Alternative to Paper Books

Up until recently, electronic books have only been a temporary alternative to paper books. In fact, the creation of e-Books is simply another facet to improvements in digital technology and the need to reach more people more quickly. Nonetheless, developed partially as a means to obtaining a book more quickly than waiting for it to be published in paper format, eBooks were not originally intended to replace hard copies be they paper or fully bound versions in hard cover.

All of that is about to change as authors are beginning to sign on for eBook versions of their books only. Perhaps one of the most famous of these authors is Stephen King who recently agreed to an eBook-only version of his latest publication, “Riding the Bullet.” His eBook-only novella has met with tremendous success and is promoting the way for other such books to follow. Once a novel, novella, magazine, newspaper, or children’s story can only be read as an e-Book, the choice will be an easy one. The use of e-Book readers will become commonplace as a matter of course. According to Digital Book Readers, the changes it would provide for the people and the nature are immense and vast, and certainly worth consideration.

Benefits to Green Reading: Storage and Disposal

Since storage and disposal of e-Books is more environmentally friendly than storage and disposal of traditional books, the environment will benefit greatly from the incorporation of e-Books into daily living patterns. Not only will landfills grow at a less alarming rate, but trees will be cut down less frequently as the need for paper diminishes.

The world’s forests will continue to grow while continuing to provide cleaner, oxygen-rich air. Even if these forests are allowed to grow once they have been cleared for their timber, the result is not as good as it would have been had the forest been allowed to grow. Studies have shown that older, established forests retain more carbon than their newer counterparts. Hence, the environment is better if human interaction with it changes through more responsible use of its resources.

Plus, there are other benefits to be had as well, especially where the production of traditional ink-on-paper books is concerned. Not only does the use of e-Books reduce the need to produce ink, paper, and bindings, but it also reduces the pollution associated with such activity. Moreover, e-Books are easier to transport at a lower financial and physical cost than traditional book transport.

The Facts about Paper Production of Books and Newsprint

According to the Green Press Initiative, the United States is responsible for using more than twenty million trees to produce books each and every year and that figure doesn’t take into account the 95 million trees estimated to be consumed by the newsprint industry each year. As eBook reading grows in popularity, it is hoped that these numbers will be reduced significantly.

The Green Press Initiative has also stated that landfills hold a large amount of paper products to the tune of approximately one fourth of the landfill’s content. As if taking up so much space isn’t bad enough, the decomposition of paper products produces a highly toxic greenhouse gas known as methane gas. So not only does paper production create carbon dioxide emissions during their manufacture, but they also produce methane when they fall into a state of decay. These facts certainly point to a better world with the production of eBooks on a global level.

The Harry Potter series of books, one of the most popular series ever and enjoyed by children and adults alike, is projected to reach a total of 290,000 tons of paper in its production of more than 370,000 million books as estimated by Prime View Inrternational. At a cost of 20 trees to produce one ton of paper to be used in the manufacture of books, this comes at the high cost of 5.8 million trees.

According to the U.S. Book Industry Study Group, more than 12.4 million tons of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere on an annual basis due to the mass production of books in hard copy format. This boils down to almost 9 pounds of carbon per book that is produced. Talk about leaving a carbon footprint on the world! While significant changes such as increasing the use of recycled paper are being implemented, they cannot compare to the benefits that eBooks and eBook readers can produce.

According to the Green Press Initiative, many of the world’s forests are becoming endangered due to the logging that continues to occur. Indonesia’s tropical forests lose about 4.5 million acres each year to logging, some of it illegally culled. More than 2 million acres of Canada’s Boreal Forest are logged each year with 65% of that going for paper reading and writing products. In the southeastern United States, at least 6 million acres of forests fall prey to logging companies while this area along with 26 million plantation acres is known as the largest paper producing area in the world.

Some of the Best Books are Historical Fiction Books - By: Dada Vedaprajinananda

Historical Fiction Books take you to a period that was real and re-create it for us - opening up both intriguing stories, plus also informing us of the actual history of the times, people and places - such detail is usually very close to the historical truth.

It is well known that writers of this era create some of the top historical fiction books you can read... simply as reading for pleasure or to try and recreate historical events in an entertaining way.

Likewise, there are also historical fiction writers who use different eras of history and different writing styles as settings for crime yarns - some straight forward 'whodunits' (e.g. Lindsey Davis) and some with tongue in the cheek humor such as David Wishart. Other historical fiction books are about the days of Kings and Queens, nobility and protocol, with the church intertwined?

Most people assume that historical fiction books, even those that are closely based on actual persons and events, inherently represent a much lower standard for historical accuracy than typical non-fiction history books.

When searching the libraries and internet, books will be found that are carefully crafted by authors to be highly accurate in regard to events, people, details, and circumstances of the period portrayed. Unfortunately, without even being read, these novels frequently suffer the disdain of history buffs simply because fictional elements are incorporated into the story.

Can well-written historical fiction books be equivalent in accuracy to books routinely classified as non-fiction? Works of historical non-fiction are founded on the author's interpretation of often vaguely written, contradictory, and incomplete documentation of past events.

Often events that are published as historical non-fiction is simply an educated guess by the author, based on their interpretation of the available material.

By creating authentic scenes and dialogue that may very well have happened, a novelist can enhance our understanding and appreciation of past events and the people who lived in those interesting times.

History buffs exclusively devoted to non-fiction may find that, on occasion, reading a well-crafted historical fiction books can be both enjoyable and educational.

How to increase boy's interest in reading. - By: Natasha Van Khouvers

Boys are less interested in reading than girls, it's a known fact. This is why it is important to consider adapted daily reading activities to their tastes and their needs, which are not necessarily the same as those of girls.

Boys and girls do not have the sames needs. So boys prefer construction games, balloons and small cars? Well, simply make them read books on subjects that passionate them.

To increase children's interest in books, it is also highly recommended to read everyday with your children. Reading a book with your child has several positive effects. The major positive effects on the child are the facts that you are showing your interest in spending time with him (or her) and a sense of security before falling asleep. Also reading will help improve the language skill of the child and his (or her) perception of the world, help the child take about his (or her) feelings. And then there are the benefits for adults as well. Reading on a daily basis with your kids with make you feel closer to them. It can also be a relaxing moment after a stressful day at work.

Here are some suggestions to enrich your child's daily reading:

-Make sure to create a variety in the type of books you child is reading. Choose different kinds of books, depending on the age of the child: books with images and picture books, stories, mini-novels, documentaries, poems, rhymes, etc. Boys, remember, are often more more interested with stories of adventure, books on space, trucks and airplanes or books with superheroes.
-Also, find stories which children can identify themselves to. For example, toddlers often prefer stories involving everyday situations (going to the playground, playing with the dog). Take turns in choosing a book.
-Let your child choose the book they want, but reserve the right, as an adult, to take a turn to choose a book too. Children tend to prefer books that they already know, so it is up to the adult him to encourage the child to discover new topics.
-When reading to the child, to not hesitate to stop sometimes, and let him handle the book, comment, enjoy the pictures or ask questions about the story.
-If the child is a little older, take turns when reading the book. Read the first page, and have your child read the other one. You can also ask an older brother or sister to jump into the discussion and also make them read part of the story.
-Even if your child can read, continue reading to him once in a while, because your child will always appreciate those moments.
-Start reading early. In order for a child to develop interest in reading, he or she has to become familiar with the literature and books.

Finally, these various tricks are oriented towards developing the interest for reading among young people, boys or girls. If you want to create more interest for boys in particular, favor books that focus on issues which the boy can identify himself too. Happy reading!

Buy an eBook and you won’t need any more Bookshelves - By: fin2000

Peter James is one author who recognized the possibilities of electronic books long ago. His techno-thriller ‘Host’ was the first novel to be released on floppy disk back in 1995 and he has long been an advocate of technology catching up with the paperback.

There’s nothing sacrosanct about the printed word. The paperback is a ludicrously ineffective device. It’s too bulky. Besides the portability advantage paperbacks aren’t environmentally friendly, and a vast percentage of them get pulped. If you can see every single word that’s ever been written on one computer screen, then it’s evidently more efficient.

There’s a lot to be said for every book being stored digitally as well as on paper. Not only would it be ecologically friendly, but also no book would ever go out of print. Imagine if the great Library of Alexandria had been downloaded to disk before it got burnt down – or, less fancifully, if textbooks were available as ebooks, allowing them to be durable, instantly annotated and easily updated. This version of preserving the mind bogglingly vast number of books that have been published beyond their paper incarnations is perhaps the most important factor in the evolution of ebooks.

However, even if schoolchildren in 20 years are using super resolution ebooks instead of traditional hardbacks, it still won’t mean the end of the book as we know it. It’s a variant of the ‘death of the book’ argument that’s often leveled at the Internet, and is as palpably untrue. Far from killing off the printed word, the Net has been helping it.

Authors are discovering that setting up their own Web sites helps them stay in contact with readers, not have to rely on their publishers for precious promotional funds and significantly boost their sales.

Skeptics always see the advent of fresh technologies as a face-off between the old and the new, when it’s increasingly obvious that the two tend to co-exist happily. The Net and the printed word are feeding off one another, and it’s precisely this cozy relationship that ebooks hope to emulate.

Patricia le Roy’s ‘The Angels of Russia’ was allowed to compete for the Booker Prize in 1998, a first for a digital title. Such has been the interest in le Roy’s book that it was published as a paperback, bringing the relationship of books and ebooks full circle. That’s the plan, anyway.

In 2001 Microsoft entered the digital book publishing business. Microsoft is sensibly pushing for an open ebook standard, so that all the different machines can read the same texts. Microsoft is essentially trying to stop the sort of technology war that happened between the x2 and k56flex modem standards. Microsoft’s clear type technology, available in Windows XP/Vista triples the resolution of anything previously available on a computer screen.

With Microsoft onboard, it looks as if the future of ebooks in one shape or another is assured. It’s the Net that has done more to popularize the idea of reading from a screen than anything else – and it’s also the Net that will ensure that, whatever ebooks turn out to be in the future, we’ll be able to get hold of any available text, anywhere. Just as the Net is helping the sales and distribution of real books, so it’ll help ebooks preserve all our literary yesterdays.

Joseph Letzelter Collection of Books – Purpose and Values - By: JosephLetzelter02

Book collecting is bringing together of books which in their contents, their form or the history of the individual copy possess some element of permanent interest, and either actually or prospectively are unusual, in the sense of being difficult to acquire. This condition of rarity, which figures much too largely in the popular view of book-collecting, is entirely subordinate to that of interest, for the rarity of a book devoid of interest is a matter of no concern.

On the other hand, so long as a book (or anything else) is and appears likely to go on to be easily procurable at any moment, no one has any reason for collecting it. The expectation that it will always be easily procurable is often groundless; but so long as the eagerness exists it restrains collecting, with the result that Horn-books are much rarer than First Folio Shakespeare’s. It has even been laid down that the ultimate rarity of books varies in the inverse ratio of the number of copies originally printed, and though the generalization is a little sweeping, it is not far from the truth.

To conquest over small difficulties being the chief element in games of skill, the different varieties of book-collecting, which offer almost as many varieties of grades of difficulty, make excellent hobbies. But in its essence the pastime of a book-collector is identical with the official work of the guardian of a museum, and thus also with one branch of the duties of the librarian of any library of respectable age. In its foundation every library is a literary workshop, with more or less of a garden or leisure ground attached according as its managers are influenced by the humanities or by a narrow conception of utility. As the library grows, the books and editions which have been the Books tools of one generation pass out of use; and it becomes largely a collection or storehouse of a stock much of which is dead.

But from out of this seemingly dead stock preserved at haphazard, critics and antiquaries gradually pick out books which they find to be still alive. Of some of these the interest cannot be reproduced in its entirety by any mere reprint and it is this salvage which forms the literary museum. Book-collectors are advantaged to leap at once to this stage in their relations with books, using the dealer’s shops and catalogues as depositories from which to pick the books which will best fit with the aim or central idea of their collection. For in the modern private collection, as in the modern museum, the need for a central idea must be fully recognized.

Book Qualities

To make a center of attention a collector of book must appeal to his eye, his mind or his imagination, and many famous books appeal to all three. A book may be beautiful by virtue of its binding, its illustrations or the simple perfection and harmony of its print and paper. The desirability of a fine binding has always been felt in France, the high prices quoted for Elzevirs and French first editions being often due much more to their 17th and 18th century jackets than to the books themselves. The admiration of old bindings has greatly increased in England since the exhibition of them at the Burlington Fine Arts Club in 1891 English blind stamped bindings, embroidered bindings, and bindings attributable to Samuel Mearne being much more sought after than formerly.

Read Best-Selling Books Electronically - By: Chris Robertson

Simply put, an eBook is an electronic book. Readers can view eBooks in several formats: diskette, CD, or downloadable file. Downloading files from the Internet is by far the most common way of obtaining eBooks.

People can read their eBooks right on their personal computers or on special eBook readers. EBook readers have a few distinct advantages over computers: Users can make notes, highlight pages, and save selected text. Plus, at two pounds, lightweight eBook readers are easier to carry around than even laptop computers. Some are backlit for easy reading; most allow readers to change the font, a particularly good feature for people who prefer large print. Depending on their capacity, eBook readers store anywhere from 4,000 to over half a million pages.

Many books that appear in print have now been turned into eBooks. Readers may now find their favorite books in electronic format. They can read the works of world famous authors such as Robert Atkins, Gary Zukav, and Montel Williams in eBook format.

Other authors write manuscripts specifically as eBooks; these are books that have not appeared in print. This is an increasingly popular way for new authors to self-publish their work. Authors can get their work out to the public without going through a publishing house.

EBooks cover a wide variety of interesting topics. The most popular topics are business opportunities, health and fitness, making money, and how-to subjects. Here are some recent titles: Free Money for Life, Law Made Easy, Business Marketing for Profit 101, and Low-fat Cocktail Recipes. One EBook seller lists many more books on home business, self-improvement, and finance than on any other topics.

Certain commercial websites use eBooks to inform prospective clients about their business offerings. Such sites offer free downloads of their eBooks as a marketing tool, with the hope that a percentage of their readers will buy their products. For example, an informative eBook on fishing could refer to an online hobby store, and even include links to a page for purchasing fishing supplies.

Other sites use eBooks for educational purposes and offer downloads for free or at a nominal cost. Non-profits such as environmental and health organizations might employ this strategy to involve people in their issues.

The majority of eBooks, however, are sold on commercial websites. Large bricks and mortar bookstores sell eBooks on their websites. Other online booksellers specialize in eBooks or sell both eBooks and printed books. Some sellers might provide the first chapter or table of contents of an eBook for free so customers can "browse" through it before deciding to buy. EBooks may cost less, the same, or more than traditional paper books.

EBooks that are written specifically for the Internet and eBooks that are adapted from print may contain word or subject searches and hyperlinks to other sites or other sections of the eBook. This can be an effective marketing tool.

EBooks offer a remedy to concerns that Americans are reading less and less every year. By using 21st technology to promote the age-old art of reading, E-books contribute to a literate and intelligent society.

You Can Ride the Publishing Wave of the Future - By: Brian Mast
Here are just a few signs that the wave is coming:

- Traditional book publishers accept only a few books and reject 90-99% (no
wonder the self-publishing industry is taking off).
- Bookstores make more money placing your book on the shelf than they do from actually selling your book.
- Book publishers who pay advances know that most books will never earn out the advance paid.
- Half of books sold are not bought from bookstores.
- Over 30% of all online purchases are for books.
- And many more signs!

Who is best positioned to ride this wave?

You might already be! If you have an audience (a market, database, or ability to reach people) and an interest in helping others, then you are in a very good position.

Speakers, charities, trainers, churches, coaches, certain businesses, ministries, colleges, newspapers, magazines, websites, network marketing companies, and e-zines will have the advantage.

But basically, anyone with an audience will be positioned to ride the wave!

What is the wave?

The wave is a surge of talented authors who have books that need to be published now, who want more profits per book, who actively work to sell their own books, who treat their books like a business card, and who are willing to pay for the production and printing of their own books.

Most of these talented authors lack only one thing: a market. And if you have that market or audience already established, then you have what they need!

They need you!

This wave simply entails publishing a book and selling it directly to the best audience. A leadership book for a leadership audience, a science fiction book for a sci-fi audience, a sales training book for salespeople, a business book for business owners, etc.

The book can still make its rounds through the bookstores, Amazon.com, etc., but the majority of the books will sell to the best audience. Word of mouth marketing, referrals, greater impact, and higher royalties come as a result, not to mention speaking engagements, trainings, and consulting.

How does this publishing wave work?

Here is a real example. In 2008, I helped leadership trainer David Byrd launch his powerful book, The Tripping Point in Leadership-overcoming organizational apathy (it's on Amazon.com if you want a copy). He did a paperback version and printed 10,000 copies, which retails for $11.99, and paid less than $1.00 per copy!

In just a year, he has almost gone through his 10,000 copies! And his primary audience was fellow leadership trainers and consultants. At less than $1.00 per book, he can afford to go down to $3 a book, which he does when he sells them 100 at a time, and he still makes a profit.

If you had published David's book through your own publishing label to your audience of leaders and leadership consultants, you would be riding the wave! But there are countless great authors out there, most of which have already been rejected by traditional publishers, who need exactly what you have - a market.

Ride the wave!

What you need to ride the wave:

To ride the wave, you need a market (audience, database, platforms, etc.), and if you have multiple markets, then you need to decide which is best.

Then, create your own publishing label. Sounds daunting, but it isn't. Start with a name (it could be your current business name), create a logo, and you are good to go! (I assume you have a business address and checking account already in place.)

If you are wondering about all the production work (layout, cover artwork, editing, writing, and proofing), printing (getting bids, ISBN numbers, and barcodes), and basic marketing (contracts, foreign rights sales, details for your website, your ads in the back of the books, and Amazon.com), you can relax! You don't have to worry about all these pieces because that is what my company does and has been doing for many years.

You have the market, the authors need what you have, I help with the behind-the-scenes work, and you are free to ride the wave. Email dtanetwork@directtoauthors.com if you are ready to go.

There is one final element: cost … and you don't have to pay for it! The authors pay for the production and printing of their books, not you. And in addition, you make money from the books sold to your market and from each book printed for your authors.

The wave is there … go ride it!

Online Book Marketing: Creating Relationships is Imperative - By: Dave Robus

Online the biggest and most advantageous tool a bookseller or business can have is their own quality website. Your website acts as your virtual store front and sales force all in one place.

You can then use this website and the internet to do your online book marketing and find out if your product is good enough to sell repeatedly.

If there are forums centered on the topic of your book you should seriously consider becoming a member of those forums, where although you can't promote your book outright, you can append your signature and web address to the end of your postings and emails. Online forums are potent grounds for traffic which is targeted to your particular book, mainly because of their clearly defined themes and topics.

If you want to stand out from the crowd you should consider producing quality graphics, not the stock templates that most authors use for their websites. Never do the basic promotion of having a third party write a press release, then sending it to the local paper on your behalf, you can do much better by writing it yourself.

After all nobody know's your product as well as you do they? Basically never do anything traditional, which is what many self publishing houses advise you to do when it comes down to the Nitty Gritty of marketing your own book online.

The real key is to figure out for yourself the best ways to reach your Niche Target Market? A particular Niche of people who are willing to pay for the information in your book. It is most important to keep this target information in mind as you write your book. Get your hands on the right Target Niche Information and start shifting more books from your endeavours than you can ever imagine.

Consider doing article marketing and make sure that your article is jam-packed with more high-quality information than any other article on the subject of your book, but without referring to it or your website in any way until you get to the resource box. (This is then your chance to do your promotion, so make a first class job of it and you will always reap the rewards of your efforts.)

Write articles centred around the aspects of your website's theme and submit those articles to the major article directories. Just by doing so you will rapidly see a pickup in traffic to your website.

Always make for yourself an introductory list to writing a business plan. There are a wide range of books available on business plan writing and it could be worth your while getting hold of one or two.

Even before you start writing, it is imperative to picture your target audience in your mind, as this will help in the successful promotion of your book. It is extremely important to identify the target audience that you are considering writing the book for, long before starting to write the book, because trying to find a Niche Market or specific reader for your book after it's completion would be a serious challenge. Make sure your manner of writing is simple to follow and flows nicely, just like the spoken word.

You will start to see your book sales begin to pick up quite rapidly if you have followed the advice above, but once they have peaked and started to slowly decline it is time to make plans for moving onto your next product or book, whilst still continuing to promote your previous one. This will then keep your name or Niche up to date in the minds of your target audience.

Remember to always keep the momentum going if you want your online success to keep on running just like a river.

If you have already published your first book and haven't carried out any of your own promotion and marketing, with the harsh realization that you are getting nowhere unless you put in a significant change, then your career will most certainly end just as quickly as it began.

Therefore you should make it imperative to start creating trusted relationships right away. Once you establish those relationships keep building on them, in order to gain the support and credibility you will be requiring in the future months and years of your online and ebook publishing career.

That is why using a quality website for either your own or affiliate eBook marketing is a total necessity. The glut of newly released eBooks is what drives the need for proper book and eBook marketing, along with the average bookstore which nowadays that keeps much less stock, relying very heavily on the WWW to generate more and more of its sales.

Public Domain Books: How to Use Them for Creating an Income - By: Dave Robus
Old books in the public domain can be a great source of inspiration and suitable content for producing new material such as CD's, DVD's or ebooks. What's more... and even better than this, is that if you use a public domain book you can take the whole thing if you wish and recreate it into your very own.

Just scan the pages and any illustrations into your computer, edit the wording if you want to and bring the language up to date for modern readers. Hey Presto you have created a product for yourself, one that you can sell and make a fantastic income from on a recurring basis, for life if you want to.

One of the easiest ways to find old books especially those in the Public Domain, is to have a browse around local second hand book stores or at jumble sales, boot fairs, craft markets etc.

However another good place to look would be on ebay, using their search facility for antiquarian books and also the illustrated section of the books for sale area.

All books from pre 1923 if from the USA will be found to be in the public domain and therefore available for you to use and recreate as your very own. Books authored prior to seventy years since year end of the death of the original author in the United Kingdom are also in the Public Domain and yours for the taking to recreate as you see fit.

There are specialist sites such as Project gutenberg, at www.gutenberg.org where you can browse massive databases in order to find a book of your choice in almost any Niche that you can think of.

Q) What do I need to produce my own eBook from the public domain?

A) You will not need many materials in order to produce your own modern ebook or any other product from the public domain.

As long as you have a computer with a scanner and printer you should be OK.

However if you are going to reproduce the book onto CD for regular sale then it would be wise to have a good software programme for turning your ebook into a CD version on a regular basis. Naturally if you want to sell your new product as a direct download ebook then you will need a PDF writing programme on your computer.

The best known one of these is Adobe writer, but there are a large amount of very cheap or even free to use PDF writing/ converting programmes available. I use one called Docudesk and it is extremely reliable and simplicity itself to use.

You only need to convert your book once and it is instantly ready for your customers to download as many thousands of times as you require. You can then sell it or give it away freely as an incentive to purchase another one of your more expensive products.

TO SUM UP THEREFORE!

1) Decide in what Niche Market you want be, then obtain your Old Book for this Market.

2) Go out and research for your products. Really simple all you have to do normally is browse around second hand bookshops, jumble stalls, boot fairs etc.

3) Buy your book, making sure that it is public domain material. IE: Normally older than 1923 in the USA or more than 70 years from the end of year of the death of the original author in the UK.

4) Re create your book using your computer scanner or by taking the pages to a photocopy shop or local printers and ask them to copy every single page in its entirety for you.

5) Scan the pages into your computer using a notepad or word file in order that you can make any alterations you desire.

6) Add in any illustrations wherever you see fit.

7) Change the title if you want to and even add your name as the author.

8) Your newly created old book from the Public Domain is now ready for you to market to the world and make money for you.

To market your book you can advertise it on places such as amazon, ebay, or even better join clickbank and sell it as an instant download item. Anything at all that you do to get your book known to the world at large will help you to make fantastic money every time someone purchases from you, for a very long period into the future.

For instance you could promote your digital ebook or even a printed version of it, by using social bookmarking sites or creating a blog for yourself.

You should also consider using article marketing sites so that you can write reviews and articles which normally allow you to mention your products at the end of the article.

You can usually have two links to your products or to the website's which you use to promote them. These links are allowed in a special box, (commonly known as a resource box) which immediately follows your article.

Other methods of advertising your Old Books would be on the pay per click sites such as google adwords, but these can be expensive if you don't know what you are doing and I recommend sticking to the free methods, at least until you have gotten a few sales and some experience under your belt.

Easy Ways to Online Book Marketing for Pleasure & Profit - By: Dave Robus
The best way to look at online book marketing is to think about creating relationships. This is an integral part of authoring books of any type and it is not really enough to be simply an expert writer.

Marketing of books is all about creating attention to them, to try and convince prospective readers to buy. Put simply, the basic truth about marketing a poorly written and edited book is that it can be embarrassing, causing returns and refund requests.

You would be advised to use a well written sales letter type of website for either your own ebook or as an affiliate book marketer.

Books, whether they might be Old Books or New Books of any type have the ability to make us happy, sadden us, heal us or create inspiration in our brains and they can transport us in our minds to new and intriguing places and other imaginary worlds.

Books and ebooks basically are "materials of experience and dreams," and you never know whether you'll be happy with a particular book until you've actually spent time reading it.

Only when you have invested a little of your time can you decide whether or not a book is for you and indeed whether to complete your travel to the very last page. This will always be so, no matter if the book you are reading is an old book, new book, fiction book, biography, educational book or indeed any other creative writing work.

Online book marketing works far easier and much better than traditional book marketing. For individuals that have the motivation, and driven ability to sell their book it can really work extremely well.

Regular Marketing of your book can help to increase its sales for a greatly extended periods, which is an established and well proven fact.

Which leaves just the remaining question.

Do you want to take the plunge and get your book produced & marketed in an innovative, cash generating way. so that you call attention to your book, and convince prospective readers to buy it?

It is definitely possible for you to make masses of recurring income from your book for many years to come by carrying out one or more of the following.

1) Build a web page to establish an online presence, making your book available via a website.

2) Try to place your book for viewing in bookshops, libraries, supermarkets, etc.

3) Generate other spin off products from your book, then market those products as well.

As an example, if you write a book about keep fit training you can obtain partnerships with a local gym or health centre.Or maybe an International Training equipment manufacturer, to whom you can offer an affiliate commission for marketing and selling your book.

In return you will obtain an affiliate commission whenever their product is sold through a link in your book.

You should try to obtain partnerships with associations, organizations and businesses that are relevant to the marketing of your book and try to get those partnerships well known in the public domain.

Every time you add new chapters to and restructure your book, re market it to the public using the same methods that you used in your original book marketing strategies. Even before you write a single chapter, try to visualise a picture of your prospective target audience, and you will enjoy much more success in the promotion of your book.

Remember always try to create and foster good relationships with your prospective joint partners and affilaites. Also have a policy of creating a good relationship with your prospective purchasers, so that they build up a trust in you, possibly becoming a customer for many of your future products for life.

The Best Self Help Books - By: Steve Gillman
How do you choose the best self help books? That depends on what you want to accomplish. Are you looking for peace of mind, more money or less fear? Here are five self help books which I have read and can recommend, along with some tips on how to find more that are right for you.

"Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway," by Susan Jeffers, is all about personal growth and building confidence. It addresses the backward idea that we need to wait until we feel no fear before we can act to change our lives, when in fact it is in action that fear is overcome.

"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," by Stephen Covey, deals with seven essential principles you can incorporate into habits that will make you more effective in any area of life. This one is about character building above all.

"The Millionaire Next Door," by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko is about money. Specifically, it's about how people accumulate wealth in the United States. Subtitled, "The Surprising Secrets of America's Wealthy," it clues you in to little known facts like the tendency of millionaires to buy used cars, and the simplest strategy of all for getting rich: spend less than you make and invest the difference.

"Peace Is Every Step," by Thich Nhat Hanh, is about living a more spiritual life and finding peace. If you have ever needed a good example of forgiveness and love to follow, this is the man. The subtitle is, "The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life," and suggests the method he uses in his own life: mindfulness meditation.

"The Essential Law of Fearless Living," by Guy Finley, is the best of these self help books. Finley has a way of getting at the heart of a matter with stories, metaphors and insight that is transformative. In my experience, nobody does a better job revealing what is really going on in the human mind, and helping us see into our own minds.

Best Self Help Books - Finding More

There are thousands of self help books out there. If you want to find more of the ones that are best for you, look for those presenting ideas which are new to you. You should be able to learn something after reading a page or two. Why new ideas? Because none of us would need these books if the ideas we already have were working perfectly.

That may seem obvious, but it is easy to fall into the habit of looking for books which confirm our existing beliefs. Believe it or not, there are "self help" books out there which will help you defend your desire for retribution, encourage your greed, give you reasons to stay angry and unforgiving, and help you engage in fantasies of instant wealth, health and happiness.

Also, don't limit yourself to regular books. Many of the best self help books are on CD now as well, so you can listen while driving or taking a walk. In fact, some programs are only on CD or MP3 recordings, and you won't find them in bookstores.

Getting Ahead Of The Game With The Power Of Business Books - By: Zac Parker
Today's world is not only busy and often overwhelming, but time is short. With so much information being utilized for various purposes in this "information age" it is quickly becoming apparent that information is the true power source of success. The more you know the better decisions, the more informed decisions you make.

Never more than now has it been more important to become not only powerfully motivated towards your goals, but book smart in every concievable area surrounding your goal environment. With the right set of business books in your library you can truly become a pioneer in your field of study. Learning from the masters - those who write those highly informative business books - not only gives you the ability to see a bigger picture, a higher awareness, and a tremendous advantage over those who are not in the "know" (K= knowledge Now= right now), but it hightens your potential to formulate the right actions that will plant seeds towards your chosen path, your goal.

The collective wisdom in business books you will find everywhere very conveniently these days, is a form of true power that you can tap into just by reading the words. Once you read all the right business books surrounding your chosen destiny, your path to happiness and fulfillment, you will not only enjoy making the right decisions, planting the right seeds, and mobilizing your resources including the right people who are smarter than you like Henry Ford did, but you will also see the world through a high definition awareness that makes even the things you already know exciting new experiences as you redefine what you thought you knew about them!

Business books come in all varieties and many flavors. The beauty of most of these are that they often will refer you to others in the same circle and using the internet to join forums around business books, you can get insight from others reading the same book as to where they got and what the other business books they used were called and who authored them. Book retailer sites online also have a nice feature that allows you to see what other people purchasing that book also bought which shows you potentially other books that may help your education towards your goal!

Books are extraordinarily powerful if you utilize them. Imagine a world without books and all you see is lack of civilization. It was books in the first place that gave people the ability to learn from those they never even met, making the world much more powerful. The first real internet was books, and if you look back, the internet wasn't always interactive was it?

The Power Of Business Books In Your Life! - By: Zac Parker
This is the dawning of a new age of education where going to college is quickly becoming the slow and inefficient way to learn. Don't get me wrong school has its place and for the most part it works, however what happens when you want to get an education but don't have all the time in the world to go to classes? What if your not after a degree but just want to learn what you need to know to run a successful business? This is where the intrigue comes in- Business Books.

Many people have started to realize that business books are actually written quite well and many authors have written them both in an easy entertaining manner that is also void of the "padding" of information that you just don't need, and in a way that gives you a more detailed "cliff-notes" type segment of many of the most powerful industries in business today.

The right books and in the right areas of interest can become a college class of its own. Reading the right set of books that are well written and highly informative can give you an enormous advantage in life, and reading unlike the college classes counterpart allows you to learn on your terms in your own time/schedule.

If you must have the classroom environment with a guru you can go online and find plenty of them, often including the very authors of the books you've come to love and learn from. These days authors are often found in forums and even chat rooms if your lucky. The beauty of business books both modern and classic versions, is there are many new ways to read them. There are even services that take full sized business books and convert them into books that remove the fluff, unnecessary, or even entertaining sections that you don't need, allowing you to read said book without losing any of the vital information in a fraction of the time it would take to rummage through the whole book!

With business books in this shortened fashion you can get more read in the same time. Regardless, however, of if you choose to read the business books that are shortened or the full version, the fact remains the same, information is potential power, a power the books give you is awareness, knowledge and useful tools to create, control, and more efficiently navigate your world- but once you aquire this "potential" power it is up to you to USE IT, which is truly what makes it no longer potential but actual power.

Technical Requirements for Publishing Your Own Book with Print on Demand - By: Jerry L. Work
With POD, depending on your needs, you are probably going to be on your own when it comes to formatting your book. It's something you need to get right, because if your formatting is incorrect, the book may not make it through the process queue, and even if it is, it will lack a professional appearance. If you're publishing the book as a credibility builder to help your business, you want it to convey a sense of professionalism. If you're looking to make a living on book sales, you want the book to be seen in a positive light. So spend some time on formatting.

In most cases, you will be submitting a PDF file to the printing company. But before you can create a PDF, you need something to create the file - a source file. So should you just start typing and click a button to create your PDF? No way. What you see on screen is what the PDF will look like, and the PDF defined what your book will look like. If your source file is not formatted, your final product will look very amateurish. If that is the look you want for your book, then so be it. But I highly suggest you create your book in such a way that it actually looks like a professionally-created book.

If you've ever read a book (hopefully you have), you've noticed that most books aren't just text straight through to the end with no breaks. They are cut up into sections, which are cut up into chapters. There are also blank pages and images to help with the flow of the book. You should do that also. Make your book look and flow like a real book. And definitely avoid the use of really big type so you can make the book look bigger than it is. That trick is often used when selling marketing ebooks and other non-traditional format books. Your book should contain enough legitimate content that it is not necessary for you to resort to that trick. Strive to create a product that is professional and provides real value to those who read it.

In terms of physical dimensions, you should probably go with something smaller than the default documents size on your screen. A size I like to use is six inches by nine inches. That is about the size of a traditional paperback. This will cause a shift in your page numbers. So if you have a table of contents or an index, you will need to make sure that those sections of the book are updated so that the page numbers are correct.

There will probably be some output settings that need to specified to get your PDF file to be the same physical size as your source file. If these are not set properly, your PDF file will not be correct. You should carefully inspect your PDF file for this and other problems.

The last piece of the puzzle is your cover art. Your POD company should provide you with a template on which to create your artwork. The physical size of your artwork file is dependent on the physical size of your book, so this step has to come last. Make sure your PDF is finalized before you create your artwork. Use a high resolution for your art and strictly follow the guidelines and template provided by your printer.

Now, I have not worked with every print on demand company – not even close. So there may be some companies that have a process that differs from this one. The main thing is just to make sure you follow the rules established by your printer. That will insure that you end up with a final product you can be proud of.

The Largest Online Bookstore: Something You Should Check Out! - By: Snazal

When it comes to shopping, we all know that everyone loves it. This is not just around the holiday season either, anytime and one of the biggest things that people like to shop for is books. Shopping for books in a regular bookstore can be a difficult task as the bookstore can be out of the particular book that you are looking for or it could simply not carry it, which is why finding the largest online bookstore is something that everyone should do and everyone needs to do.

There are many different websites that boast that they are the largest online bookstore, but most of the time, they do not even come close to it. Either the website itself will not contain any of the books that you want or the website itself is not user friendly at all. That is one of the main reasons why search engines were created and while a search engine can only do so much, it can definitely help you in the long run.

If you are looking for the largest online bookstore, there are a few things that you should keep in mind in order to ensure that you do, in fact, find one of the largest online bookstores. Firstly, any website that boasts that it is the largest online bookstore is most likely going to be a sham, not only does a credible website need not boast, but you should be able to tell right away if a bookstore website is going worth your time.

One of the biggest reasons that people are constantly switching from regular old bookstores to finding the largest online bookstore is simply due to the price of books. Online retailers can offer deeper discounts on many books at no charge where many regular bookstores make you sign up with their reward program in order to receive any type of discount. In this day and age, saving even as little as twenty-five dollars for an enrollment fee is something that people need to be doing.

Another great reason that people are choosing to find the largest online bookstore is because many online retailers also offer sellback options. For example, if you are going to college right now and you have a text book that your college campus will not take back, you can sell it via one of the many websites out there and receive some money back on a text book that you got. This is a great way for college students to gain money back on books that they would have lost money on.

So as you can see, there are many different reasons why people are constantly seeking out the largest online bookstore and why it is a need. Regular bookstores that you have to walk into are great to meet with a friend and talk with over coffee, but as far as finding yourself a great selection of books, you are definitely better off going online and doing a quick search via a search engine to find the best bookstore online.

The Benefits of Buying Books from a Book Seller - By: Snazal

When describing what a bookseller is, or what the function of bookselling is, it is very easy for the terms to get confusing. Book sellers can be wholesale booksellers or retail booksellers. They can also be chains or local independent bookstores that specialize in the retail and distribution of books. They can work between the publisher and the public to distribute books, or they can also work between the author and the public as publisher. Booksellers can function as wholesale booksellers also, moving and breaking down larger lots containing both new and also used books into smaller lots for redistribution, and selling them off to other businesses, other wholesalers, and individuals. Books sold in this manner are located in a warehouse and then shipped from there instead of from actual stores when the shipments are ordered.

Retail book sellers range in size. You will find booksellers on college campuses which specialize in textbooks and reference books for research and classes, as well as used bookstores that specialize only in used, discounted books. Today, booksellers, or bookstores, offer coffee and comfortable chairs, internet access, music and children's corners to entertain individuals of all ages. Bookstores cater to browsers and buyers alike, and can order books that are not easily accessible or ready found on their shelves for customer convenience. Booksellers offer anywhere from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of titles depending on the size of the store, and they will also specialize in the convenience of the area they service, selling maps and other guides as well. They will also carry periodicals such as newspapers and magazines.

The many hundreds and thousands of titles carried through book sellers are listed conveniently by category. These catagories can include: Biography, Comics/ Graphic Novels, Children's Books, Horror, Crime/ Thriller/ Mystery, Fiction, and also many more. You are also able to find collectible, antique, and rare books, CDs and audio cassettes, photography, art and carft categories also. If you are searching for specific authors, titles or ISBN numbers, booksellers have information or customer service desks available where a helpful person can assist you in finding information that you are searching for by looking in the databases of their different stores and warehouses. This is also a great way for new college students to locate certain editions of a wide range of textbooks and other books that are required for their dissertation research, since these types of searches will require a larger database of books for them to choose from. Most book sellers believe in satisfaction guarantees and will cover or replace any damaged products if possible. They also have their own personal policies on exchanges and returns, and many times you are able to find that customer service is really just a simple click away.

There are many booksellers to choose from in every city across the United States with varying amounts of titles. Keep your eyes open for specials as you may find that you can save even more money when buying your books from a book seller that a large franchise.

The Benefits of Buying Books from Wholesale Book Sellers - By: Snazal

Wholesale book sellers purchase large lots of both new and used books in bulk for redistribution, and sell them to other businesses as well as to individuals. Books are held in and shipped from warehouses when shipments are ordered, and they are sent directly to that company, other wholesaler, or individual’s address. Large lots are broken down into smaller lots to be sold to other wholesalers, and new and used books are redistributed without altering their contents to sell through their own stores. This process saves companies thousands of dollars compared to the purchase of books directly from the publisher. Many wholesalers have websites with long lists of titles and authors of both popular books and rare books in both new and used condition.

When books are purchased through wholesale book sellers, they can redistribute them at discounted prices. Individual customers purchasing publications from wholesale book sellers benefit by saving hundreds of dollars on what they buy in comparison to the purchase of books through average book sellers. These savings are also passed on to businesses and other wholesalers! When books are purchased in large quantities directly from publishers, they are usually not discounted and do not have bulk prices for the average book seller. Average book sellers must purchase books at cost, and need to mark up the price of their books to make a sufficient profit; an unfortunate situation for the customer. Companies and businesses can save thousands of dollars purchasing smaller lots from wholesalers instead of directly through the publishers.

Thousands of titles are carried through wholesale booksellers, and they list their titles by category. Some of these popular book categories include: Children’s Books, Comics/ Graphic Novels, Crime/ Thriller/ Mystery, Horror, Fiction, Biography and more. You can also find rare, antique and collectible books, audio cassettes and CDs, art, photography and architecture categories as well. If you’re searching for specific titles, authors or ISBN numbers, you can type in the information you are looking for and click search to find your book or author. This is an excellent way for college students to find specific editions of textbooks and books required for dissertation research, as these kinds of searches require a large database of books to choose from. The cost of the books works well with college student budgets. Many wholesale book sellers have satisfaction guarantees to cover any damaged products. They have their own policies on returns and exchanges, and you can find customer service is just a click away.

Shipping costs vary and include taxes and handling charges. Most wholesale booksellers will give you the option for priority shipping or overnight for additional charges. Choose a wholesale bookseller for your next book buy and test them out, customer service is very important and they will do their best to ensure that you are satisfied with your purchase. It is also possible to add promotional codes or customer codes to certain purchases for additional discounts. Keep your eyes peeled for specials and sales around the holidays.

What Publishers Need to Know About Print on Demand - By: Jerry L. Work

Let's face it. Publishing is a traditional type of business that hasn't changed much in the last half-century. It's a business that is in bad need of an overhaul; a new paradigm.

However, there is a movement afoot that could save this industry from extinction, and its' name is "Print on Demand," also known as "POD."

POD is a process by which a printing company prints books on an individual basis, based on actual orders for the book, rather than printing large quantities at once. In other words, if I order one copy of a book printed by a POD company, the printer will only print my copy of the book, rather than hundreds or thousands of copies for future orders that might (or might not) come in.

Just a few of the major benefits of printing on demand include:

1. The initial setup cost to begin printing a new book is miniscule compared to a traditional printing company.
2. There is less ongoing expense involved. Smaller quantity book orders, even down to a quantity of one, equal one printing. There is a lot of carrying costs involved in having to warehouse large quantities of books - books that may not ever sell.
3. POD offers publishers much more flexibility than traditional printers. Print on demand is a unique business model that allows publishing companies to generate revenue in new ways, cut costs, and increase market share.

Print on demand is still young, and there are still technological innovations to come that will make it even more attractive. POD produces books that are equal in quality to books printed via traditional methods. And with POD, publishers are not limited to one format of the product. Books can be made in large print format, printed in multiple languages, or just about any configuration you can imagine. They can also be created in digital format, providing another way publishers can make their products available. When publishers can offer products in more formats, both the publisher and the purchaser wins.

In the near future, it is highly likely that bookstores will have their own on-demand printing machines, which will allow them to offer their customers any book imaginable. This will remove the limitation on the number of books that a bookstore can offer because of space limitations. This is going to cause sweeping changes in the business of selling books.

In today's business environment, businesses have to figure out how to do more with less. POD lets you do just that. It gives even the smallest publisher an opportunity to compete against much larger companies.

Bookkeeping: The Necessary Evil - By: Brooks Perry

Are you a small business owner looking to stay under budget by doing the bookkeeping yourself? Well my friend, have I got news for you…you are not alone! There are many other small business owners out there who are looking to save time and money too. But they have dug themselves into a hole by writing every check themselves and balancing each account without any assistance. Unfortunately, bookkeeping goes beyond entering a few numbers here and there which takes away from what you love to do – grow and sell your business. Enter VBP OutSourcing – the solution to your financial problems.

Time is money. This is a bookkeeper’s motto in life. Your time is too valuable to spend doing the financials when you have a business to run. You also don’t have the time to worry about whether there is enough money to hire new employees or if your expenses are too high to purchase new supplies for the office. All of these financial questions can overload your brain and take away from other more important tasks and responsibilities of running your business. This is where a professional bookkeeper comes into the business picture.

A bookkeeper is not just another face in the accounting crowd. They are a vital part of your team, tracking the financials of the company, and ultimately the reason for your business’s success. Bookkeepers are there to make sure that your company does not run into one of the many common mistakes business owners find themselves in. The following list is 7 reasons why your business, small or large, should hire a bookkeeper, rather than do the finances themselves.
1. Focus On Growing Your Business. Your bookkeeper will spend time every week keeping your paperwork up to date, so you can relax and spend more time on your business. Bookkeepers know what they are doing and enjoy what they do. Bookkeepers maintain accurate records and financial books which provide insight into important business questions such as: “Is my company earning enough money?” By keeping up to date with your paperwork, you can avoid the risk of late payment fees, penalties, and fines
2. Bookkeepers Understand. A bookkeeper understands the need for financial organization. They are able to reduce the chaos that are receipts, PO’s, invoices, etc. cluttering your desk to order by efficiently filing your papers away. A bookkeeper can also help by reducing your risk of paying twice for the same bill or by paying the wrong amount. Again, bookkeepers understand that your time and money are the most important assets to your business.
3. Audits…Need I Say More? Having your business financials in order and up to date is legally required by law. Specifically, if you are a government contractor, a business is required to be compliant with DCAA regulations. If an auditor would pop into the office today without notice – would you be sweating bullets or relaxing with your feet propped up on your desk? Bookkeepers keep your financial books current, so that you don’t have to worry when auditors drop in unannounced.
4. If You Don’t Know Where You’re Going, Any Road Will Take You There. Don’t let this be your company’s motto. Know where your business is going by understanding where it has been. Bookkeepers will paint a clear financial picture by telling you which road to follow when you come to that fork in the road. They will provide you with answers to your most important business questions such as “How does my spending compare to my sales?” so that you will make the smartest and most competent business decisions.
5. Patterns, Patterns, Patterns. Patterns are everywhere you look. They are frequently found in numbers – from prime numbers to ratios to your company’s sales patterns. Since your bookkeeper is constantly reviewing your account, they have the ability to see patterns or reoccurring financial events that you, as a business owner, may overlook. By providing you with up-to-date financial reports, you can track patterns (peaks and declines), so that you can be more prepared for your next business decision. Budgets, a result of knowing your company’s patterns are a must for businesses. If you know the patterns of your business, creating a budget will come smoother and much easier. Budgets can then forecast your fiscal flow which, in turn, will control your cash needs and manage your expenses. In simple terms, the solution to the success of your business is to hire a pattern seeking bookkeeper.
6. The Dreaded Date of April 15th. It makes no difference who you are - an individual, a family, a small business of 10, or a large company of 6,000 - you must file an income tax return every April. With a bookkeeper, your financial records will be consistent, but more importantly, correct. Therefore, when it comes time to prepare your taxes, you can rest assure that they will be done on time and in compliance.
7. Bottom Line: Increase Your Bottom Line. By hiring a bookkeeper to your team, you can be sure that you will have more time to focus on your business earnings. Instead of a salaried employee, you can pay for only the hours needed on your financials. In other situations, if your business is in need of a partnership to increase or sustain profitability, then having well-maintained and up-to-date books will, therefore, paint a prettier financial picture for your future colleagues. In the worst case scenario, if you have to sell your business, buyers will be able to see dedication and value in which you put into your business through well-kept financial books. Bottom line – hire a bookkeeper!
Although bookkeeping is a necessary evil, it is still necessary! Therefore, instead of trying to take on the job of bookkeeping by yourself, look to a licensed bookkeeper to take care of your books so that you can rest assure knowing your financials are in order come your next audit!

The Suffering Antidote In Krishna Books - By: Victor Epand

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada translated and wrote many commentaries on Krishna, but more specifically about what he is like in his original, personal form.

They are also about he how he is doing in the eternal spiritual world. In the temporary world of manifold miseries, one will understand his transcendental activities that can attain the transcendental platform of eternal existence in full bliss and knowledge. The Krishna books tend to provide much more fascinating stories and invaluable spiritual knowledge.

Once you see the Krishna books, then you may like many others that express doubt. In fact, they wonder if they are mythology or if they are suppose to take his messages literally. Some feel that Krishna is just as imaginary as Superman or mythological gods of ancient lore. These people instead of rejecting Krishna as imaginary, they need to understand who he is, because he is much more than a hero or myth. His pastimes are described in these books and are transcendental. They deal with the philosophical understanding of the cause of all causes.

Many wonder how the ultimate truth can be a person, but Krishna's personality is not limited or material. He possesses the opulences of wealth, fame, beauty, knowledge, strength, and renunciation. Since so many people have had bitter experiences with people being imperfect and mortal, which is why it is so easy to come to the conclusion that truth can not have a personal form. Jiva Gosvami informs us that if we do not accept the truth as inconceivable, then we will never begin to understand him.

Krishna is a person, but he is not limited, frail, nor mortal as we are. Another pressing objection to taking Krishna consciousness seriously is that the concept of God as the supreme is valid, and understanding how it relevant to us today. We are faced with practical and urgent problems of economic and class struggles, and there is the imminent threat of nuclear war. It is wondered how can Krishna help with our everyday predicaments.

Unless we know the truth, then we can never solve problems arising from the immediate, relative truths. An expert physician knows certain symptoms indicate a specific disease and by curing the disease, then he can cure all the symptoms. Similarly, the world's problems of conflict, scarcity, oppression, disease, and so on, are merely symptoms of our ignorance of life's real purpose, which is know, serve, and love Him.

Unless our leaders become enlightened in God consciousness and attack the root cause of social ills, not to mention widespread spiritual ignorance, then no palliative measures can ever succeed in curing the body politic. Human propensity for love has to be satisfied in terms of real and its spiritual needs. Our ultimate need is to understand our intimate loving relationship with Krishna, who is not irrelevant. In fact, attempting to solve our problems without Him is irrelevant.

Forgetting him is disobeying His codes of universal religion are the causes of all suffering. Careful study of the Krishna books is not a waste of time, but an activity of the utmost importance. For those of us not interested in reading lengthy treatises on transcendental philosophy, Srila Prabhupada has presented the Krishna books in the attractive form of short stories comprising ninety chapters.

Krishna books are actually a summary study of the Tenth Canto of the Sanskrit scripture Srimad-Bhagavatam, which describes Lord Krishna's all attractive pastimes. They make the essence of this most sublime Vedic literature accessible to modern readers all over the world. The relevance to our modern difficulties becomes even clearer when we consider the setting of the original narration of Srimad-Bhagavatam, which was a sacred forest in India five thousand years ago.

The sage narrated the pastimes of Lord Krishna to the emperor Parikshit, who had been cursed to die within seven days. By their practical example, these two exalted persons teach us that life's ultimate purpose is to hear about, glorify, and remember the Supreme Personality of Godhead. King Parikshit was especially intent on hearing about Krishna, because he knew he would die in a matter of hours. He was confident that by hearing about Krishna during his last moments, he would attain the eternal, spiritual world and thus escape the cycle of birth and death.

Why Books Make the Best Gifts - By: Emma Walton Hamilton

There's a holiday marketing campaign going on right now called BOOKS=GIFTS. The program was organized by Random House, with many other publishing companies joining the effort. The goal is to emphasize that books are a more ideal gift than ever this holiday season, with the struggling economy. Many high profile authors like Dan Brown, Christopher Paolini, Judy Blume, Deepak Chopra and Maya Angelou are doing short video clips that share their perspective on why books make great gifts, the gimmick being that each one says "Books make great gifts because... (fill in the blank for each author)," and then "Give... (blank)."

In fact, there are several important reasons why books really do make great gifts, for everyone on your list (and especially for kids), this year and any year. Here are just a few:

* Books are evergreen - they keep on giving, well beyond the day they are received. They give with each read, and if they are subsequently shared or passed down, they keep on giving. They are like presents that can be opened over and over again.

* Books send a message to the recipient beyond that of the book itself. They tell the reader, "I care about you. I think of you as this sort of person, and therefore I think you would enjoy this book."

* Books educate, inform and inspire. They broaden consciousness and perspective. They also cultivate curiosity, nurture the imagination, and promote a sense of wonder.

* Books provide outstanding long-term value for a relatively low cost.

* Giving young people books as gifts subliminally underscores the connection between reading and the joy of receiving, thus strengthening the association between books and pleasure.

* There are countless types, genres, styles, subjects and authors to choose from, maximizing your opportunity to find something uniquely suited to each recipient.

* If you are overwhelmed by options, or not sure where to begin to find the right book for a loved one, there are myriad resources to help. Your local bookseller is trained to help match the right book to the right person. You can also explore Amazon.com's "listmania" lists and "Customers who bought this book also explored..." feature. You can pick up a copy of the New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly, American Libraries magazine or any number of other publications dedicated to reviewing books. There are even websites geared to helping people find books they love - one to explore is www.goodreads.com.

So give the best gift of all this year. Give books!
