Want To Know What Bike Tires You Should Use? - By: Rudy S. Silva
When replacing your Bike Tires, you have to choose them carefully. They have to match your bicycle. If you plan to replace them, the first thing you have to do is to determine the kind of bike you have. Experts categorize bicycles into three groups - road bike, mountain bike, and 29ers.
Each of these bikes has a certain size wheel and requires a specific type and size of tires and bicycle tube. Measure your wheel size so that you can ask your bicycle shop about those size tires.
Generally, road bikes in our time use 700C. However, some bikers prefer to use 650C for the front wheels for two reasons. Bikers either want to speed up acceleration or they are small and they need to lower the stand-over clearance.
Even road bikers differ in the way they determine their needs for bike tires. Most of the racers like their tires better with 18-23 millimeters in width, while tour bikers prefer to use tires with 25-28 millimeters to have comfort and stability.
If you are not sure of the size, you can check it on the bike rim. You can also bring it to the bike shop. Their sales representative will have the right tools to determine its size. It would also be convenient to ask them about the bicycle tubes.
Mountain bikes use 26” diameter for its bike wheels. Mountain bikes come in two types as well. If you are using downhill bikes, you should use bike tires that have the width size between 2.5” and 3.0”. However, if your bike is all-mountain bike, the ideal widths for the tires are between 1.8” and 2.4”.
The latest breakthrough in the biker’s world are the 29er bikes. It uses a wider variation of 700C. Its shape also resembles the knob more than any other 700C bicycle tires do.
After the size, consider the surface that your bike rides on. For dirt riders, they need a mountain bike wheels because of the tractions in different conditions. If the road surface you are riding is uniform, use a tire that is designed for that surface.
If the road is asphalt, the ideal bike tires are the slicks tires for maximum velocity and smooth riding. In addition, they provide good grip in most types of road condition. If the surfaces vary such as asphalt, concrete, gravel, or single track, the perfect match is the cyclo-cross tires or semi-slicks.
Treading of the bicycle is the next consideration, particularly the knobby tires for mountain bikes. Minor difference in treading can have great impact on your ride. Experts recommend sharp tread edges for balance. Semi-slicks have smooth center designed to have faster acceleration for least rolling resistance.
Inverted treads on tires have the least rolling resistance, yet they have more grip. This type of bike tires is ideal for asphalted roads with potholes. Slicks are the racers and commuters best friend. They are identical to road tires, but have wider diameter.
For knobby tires, each size is designed for a specific purpose. Smaller knobs are best for single tracks. Taller knobs have more grip when riding on technical terrain. Widely-spaced knobs are best for loose conditions. Bike tires that are knobby on the base are excellent for hard pack roads.

For those of us looking to build our own motorcycle bikes, there are many things that need to be taken into consideration. If you are a new bike builder, you may want to look into custom bike kits to help you build a bike that is safe and completely unique. Creating your own custom bike is a great way to reflect your personal style, however, if you are just starting out bike kits can help you to create you dream bike safely.
Building a custom bike can pose many problems such as how much money you are going to have to spend, the parts you will need and the best place to buy the needed parts. Buying a complete kit can help solve all of these problems because many of the kits are complete with all components you will need to build a custom bike.
One of the best things about a custom kit is that you have the certainty that the parts will work well and will not pose any threats to your safety. Although many people may advise you to purchase used parts to build your bike in order to save money, you may not be getting the best parts available. If there are any problems with used parts, especially with the engine, the bike may not work properly and you can be putting yourself in danger. It is usually best to chose a kit that has new parts as this will reduce the risk of premature parts failure.
Buying a custom bike kit is far less expensive than buying an engine, exhaust pipes and a chassis separately. There are also no delays in waiting for parts to arrive or receiving parts that do not fit. Although many kits do not include parts related to design, all other technical parts are included.
The popularity of custom kits has been steadily increasing due to the interest in custom bikes. There is a greater feeling of accomplishment when you can look at your bike and know that you created it on your own. Kits allow the process of creating your bike to be very simple and affordable. By including all necessary parts, you will save money and time by having everything you need in one place.
Creating a custom bike can be dangerous at times and so, it is important that you stay safe during building the bike. For most kits, being an experienced bike builder is not always necessary. Custom bike kits should come with easy to follow directions so building your dream bike is easy for anyone.

Choosing A Bike Heart Rate Monitor - By: Rudy S. Silva
There are hundreds of bike heart rate monitors and this makes it hard to choose the right one for you. I had a difficult time choosing an exercise monitor awhile back. Each monitor has different feature and some are harder to work with and understand. You would think that all you need is your heart rate but these new monitors have all kinds of feature.
With all these features, you need a good manual and all monitors have one. Without it, it makes it difficult to understand how to use it. If you are exercising to stay fit, then you just need a good quality unit. So don’t go over board and buy the most expensive one. You don’t need all of those features.
When considering a bike heart rate monitor, buy a medium price one that has features that you might use in the future.
So how can you determine what you want to buy? Here are some things to consider:
• Are you going to collect and store your heart rate over time?
• What other information will you want to collect other than heart rate? Will this monitor collect it?
• Where do you want to wear your monitor? On your wrist or do you have to wear it on your chest?
• Can you download your heart data to your computer for storage?
• Do you need continuous monitoring?
If you decide to buy the chest strap bike heart rate monitor, you will always have to wear it. This monitor sends information to another device on your wrist or else where. A digital signal gives you better results.
If you decide on a chest monitor, you will have to have good contact of its electrodes on your chest to get constant reliable measurement. These types of monitors may not be good for swimming.
A strapless bike heart rate monitor is placed on your finger or your wrist. Make sure you buy a medium end monitor, which is calibrated to take measurements like an ECG machine. Note that strapless devices cannot be used to gather data during your complete workout. However, you can purchase a combination chest and wrist monitoring device.
When choosing a heart monitor, there are many options to consider. Many of these options you many not even use. Here are some options that are useful:
• Heart rate alarm alerts you when you are above or below your training level.
• The amount of time you spend in your heart rate zone
• Gives you information on calories burned
• Gives you the data on how long it takes the heart to recover from your session.
• Counter timer for one minute exercises
• Bike mount for viewing during bike riding
To train properly in bike riding or just to improve your fitness, you definitely need a heart monitor. Some good monitors are the Garmin, Garmin GPS, Polar, or the Cateye. Take your time in choosing a good device. Look at all the features, but don’t buy into one that has more feature than you need. Once you buy one, try it out right away. You may not like it, and you may have to return it to the store for another brand.

Electric Bikes Vs Scooters - By: Electric Bikes
Electric Bikes are manufactured to only fit one person and can carry a small stuff. They are not expensive and have a good speed, unlike scooters which are slower and need a lot of energy. On the other hand, the motorbikes are very noisy nothing likes electric bikes which are quite, efficient and clean. There are many advantages about the Electric Bikes compared to the motorbike and the scooters.
Mountain electric bikes are very effective when climbing hills. It has an increased speed when one is climbing hills and does away with the incline factor that one view. An electric bike can manage to go up the hill in 10% at a scale of 1 to 10 with ease at a maximum incline of 80%. Scooters cannot handle hills and the motorbike is not fast enough when climbing the hills even in the countryside where the electric bike makes the effect to be amazing. A motorbike is very expensive compared to the electric bike which has favorable prices. The only expense that might be associated with an electric bike is the battery but that tends to be not that expensive as well. Taking an Ezip Electric bike, the batter that these bikes run for only cost $130. Therefore an electric bike can save you a lot of money compared to a motorbike.
A regular bike is defiantly lighter than an electric bike but the electric bike is more effective incase you get tired from exercising and this gives to building personal fitness. A motorbike and electric scooter can not be used for exercise purposes, only for fun and they do not apply any energy and will most likely end up making one gain weight. Other advantages are that it is neat green and clean in that it does not increase or affect global warming. In conclusion, it’s safer and more convenient to use an electric bike than a scooter or motorbike.

KGS Bikes Fitting Process - How and Why - By: Kevin G. Saunders
Many people ask us about our fitting protocols and how we have come to be recognized as one of the best in the world. I wrote this article explaining what we do—how to fit a bicycle—so one can have a better idea of the depth we go to in order to find an exact position for a rider.
I have studied bicycle fitting for over 25 years and have the expertise and technology to fit bicycles to clients more accurately than was previously possible. I also specialize in fitting people over the age of 40 as well as extremely short and extremely tall individuals. In these years of research, I have studied fitting systems and have discovered the pitfalls of other systems as they relate to the human bicycle rider. While other systems rely on equations and formulas, we are aware of them but place the rider first and create a unique environment for them to develop a unique fitting solution.
At KGS Bikes we have proprietary techniques to help the client become aware of the subtle differences in bike fit. By nature, humans are very adaptive and as such will ride any bike within an acceptable range of sizes. Some people have larger acceptable ranges and some have very small effective ranges.
Our technique is the reverse of traditional fitting systems for performance bicycles. We create an environment whereby the rider can perceive small differences in saddle and handlebar placement. This information is used to tell us where to position the saddle and handlebars, making the bike adapt to the client. Because neither I nor the client is restricted by traditional fitting standards and our system is both double-blind and repeatable, which is the basic definition of good science.
KGS protocols include a custom sizing cycle that makes every single interface with the rider easily adjustable - from crank length to saddle height, setback and angle, to handlebar location. The size cycle is equipped with a power meter to accurately determine effort intensity, and repeat the intensity when we change one variable at a time. The variables are changed dynamically so we can quickly determine whether the change is a good one or not. We also use video analysis of to help the client see how he or she rides a bike. The video analysis is further used as a biofeedback aid to help retrain a rider’s form. Our fitting system represents the best technology we have found to date for specialized bikes.
Our expertise is custom made bikes, hence we follow a strict protocol of fitting processes that begins with an extensive interview and documentation of the client’s current setup and riding style. We then optimize the cleats on their shoes and set up the sizing cycle identical to their current bike (unless serious problems exist that make that impractical). Our system coaxes the client to give us feedback so we can then dynamically adjust the saddle and handlebars to a perfectly fit, unique position.
We realize that riders balance differently on a bicycle based on their size, weight, fitness level and riding style. As one rides faster on a bike, more power is transmitted through the legs pressing on the pedals, ostensibly lifting the torso and changing the balance point. A power meter on the sizing cycle accurately measures how much wattage is created, so that the saddle can be set up at the right height and the correct setback. The setback of the saddle is the primary factor that makes the rider comfortable; conversely, an inaccurate setback distance can cause the rider to have too much hand pressure and/or pubic pressure.
The KGS custom fitting process stabilizes the ankle first, then fully defines the saddle height, all while the rider is performing at their desired pace. The client warms up on the sizing cycle and begins the process of observing his individual riding technique on the monitor, becoming aware of how the body actually feels on the bike. Multiple short sessions prevent the client from premature fatigue, and allow the brain to process all the new information it receives. We build a solid foundation of cleats, ankle and saddle before moving on to handlebars. At the end of the session the client then practices and reinforces the new techniques using our video analysis.
After the correct fit is attained, a cross-hair laser allows us to accurately document the custom setup. The captured data can be applied to the existing bicycle (if the bike can be adjusted to the new dimensions) or can be used to create a new bicycle.
This proprietary fitting technique has earned KGS Bikes a reputation around the world for building custom made bicycles with 100% satisfaction, since the bike is truly an extension of the owner.

Some Of The Main Reasons Your Really Need To Wear A Bike Helmet When Bicycling - By: Gregg Hall
If you are going on a ride anytime soon you will need to remember one thing, to wear your bike helmet just to be safe and not get a ticket. Even if you are not riding on the street you should wear a helmet. If you are riding on streets you should always where a helmet, you will lose an in accident and be hurt if you are not wearing a helmet.
As you probably already know there are all kinds of add on bike accessories that you can buy like lights, light clothing, reflectors and horns as well. Every single one of those items is made for your safety. You need to at least wear a helmet and have some type of reflectors on your bike. You might also want to wear light colored clothing as well.
If you look at what happens when a car hits a biker it's not good, most of the time the injuries are to the head and this is the main cause of the deaths. As I write this article a seventeen year old boy was just killed by being hit from behind while riding his bike, he wasn't wearing a helmet. The best thing you can do riding a bike and preventing a head injury is to wear your helmet. Though you can not stop accidents you can still wear your helmet and protect what you can while riding. Some bike accidents aren't even that bad but you should still always where your helmet.
At least bike helmets being made today are created to comfort your head and protect it as well as it can. Although they may look like they can break easily but they wouldn't be being sold if that were the case. You should always check just to make sure that the helmet is certified to be a bike helmet. So be sure when you are buying one to pick the best and right one for you and your noggin.
The most important thing to think about when you are buying your bike helmet is to make sure you get the one that fits your head well. If you bought a helmet that slides and moves around your noggin then that's what will happens in an accident and your head will be open to the ground. You need to have it just right on your head not to tight not to loose but you always want it more tight than loose so it wont slide and move.
In a lot of parts around the world today they have made it a legal law that you have to wear a bike helmet everywhere and anywhere you ride your bike. Even though you may not like to wear a helmet it may be the law and it will protect you in an accident and will save you from getting a ticket which if you are traveling you may not be able to afford at the time.

Bike trailers getting popular. - By: Bike Trailer Dood
Bike trailers are now a becoming popular mode of transportation. If you are wondering what a bike trailer is, it is a motorless wheeled frame attached to your bicycle. Its primary function is to help the bike rider in carrying additional load. Instead of carrying the load on the bike, it can now be carried on the bike trailer which greatly reduces the strain placed on the bike. It is convenient, easy to use and it helps you live an active lifestyle.
Bike trailers are an alternative to carrying different sorts of loads. Instead of using your car to go to the nearby grocery store perhaps, why not use your bike trailer. It not only saves you money from the gas which should have been spent by your car, it also does the job of carrying your groceries.
Planning to get a bike trailer? Make sure to decide on what you are going to use it for first. There are a variety of bike trailer designs being commercially manufactured. If you want a trailer to carry all around cargo then a cargo trailer would definitely suit your needs. If you want to take your child along with you while you ride your bike then check out the different child trailers available in the market.
There are two types of bike trailers in the market today based on the number of wheels. The first is the single wheel trailer which can carry light to medium loads. It is popular among trekkers since it is great for trail riding and narrow surfaces. It is also stable when making sharp turns at high speeds. The other type of trailer is the two wheel trailer which obviously has two wheels. It can carry heavier loads than the single wheel type. When making sharp turns a high speeds it may roll-over so be sure to slow down before making the turns.
Different bike trailers are made for different uses. The general trailers available in the market today are the general cargo trailer which is used to carry different sorts of loads from groceries to furniture, child passenger trailer which is used to carry a child, pet trailer which is used to carry cats or dogs, and canoe trailers which are used to carry long and narrow loads like canoes, kayaks and surfboards.
Caring for your bike trailer is easy and comparable to that of a bike. Cleaning the trailer requires water, soap and wax. Regularly check the tires for abnormalities like low air pressure or wear and tear for this may cause accidents.
When you are out riding in your bike trailer keep in mind that it is different from riding a bike. The responses are different. You may notice that your bike may be a bit unresponsive due to the extra load. Be sure to take trial runs in non busy roads to get you acquainted with the new riding conditions.
Riding at night is more dangerous than riding during the daytime. Make sure that you have a front light and a rear light and that both are switched on. Be sure also to have front, back and side reflectors so that you would always be visible to traffic.

Best Folding Bike For Easy Storage And Transportation - By: Robert Sheehan
Lighter in weight, easy to carry and can be easily maneuvered, yes such characteristics aptly describe a Best Folding Bike. It is quite an easy task to store and transport a best folding bicycle. Such bikes fit well in conventional carrying cases and they can be carried in trains too.
The range and category of folding bikes are gaining opulence in contemporary bike bazaar and they are being more and more used on road, off road and for racing purposes too. It is true that folding bikes are a bit too costly in comparison to non-folding bikes but they are worth that extra six pence.
Best folding bikes are items of growing interest
The Montague and the bike Friday varieties of the folding bike have recently gained immense popularity in U.S, while Brompton folding bike are becoming known to the bike enthusiasts of U.K. However, the groups of folding bikes manufactured by the Taiwan companies are also capturing the market as they yield more with higher end models and superfine biking components.
On the other hand, the specialty of DaHon folding bike lies in the fact that despite their small stature, the bikes can be easily folded with both wheels on.
The basic motto of buying folding bicycle is to easily carry them on several public and private transports including trains, ferries, RVs, small planes and boats. There are some areas where non-folding bikes of massive size and weight are not allowed during the peak traffic hours. However, the best folding bicycles are ideal for such places and even hours of the day as they can be transported without any external hazards.
A perfect folder is always required to store a superior-quality folding bike because unless you get hold of a suitable folder, storage is difficult. Though each folding bike is best in their own way, still they are not without disadvantages.
1. Montague and Slingshot folding bikes, They are the best for their excellent performance but they cannot be easily folded due to their large sized wheels.
2. The bike Friday folding bikes, Again an excellent folding product but they seem inconvenient due to their small wheel size, which brings about a harshness in riding and the wheels get heated quite rapidly.
3. The Birdy, Brompton and the small DaHons, These folding bicycles lack an extensive gear range.
What should an ideal folder of a folding bike possess?
1 The folder should fold as small as a 18inchs Birdy, a 20inch DaHon Explorer or 16inch Brompton.
2 It should not weigh more than 26 pounds
3 The folder should have a very wide gearing, handles that of a full sized bike along with a suspended frame
4 It should also have folding pedals, which help in reducing the folded width
5 The folder must make use of several standard components and accessories and it should get folded and bagged in less than 2 minutes
It is the neatness, which matters in every equipment and judged from this perspective the best folding bicycle is sure to catch the attention of the contemporary bike freak publics.

Why does a folding bike feel so light?
The magic lies in its lightweight aluminum body. Folding bicycles come in different varieties. Folding bicycles are not an inexpensive lot. All you need to do is a little bargaining before you can aptly point your finger at one of the most exclusive folding bike models.
The Internet is there to inform you about the contemporary hottest folding bike types offered at affordable price ranges. Just do not go for straight purchasing. A wise choice needs some comparisons and evaluations before the final work done.
One problem with folding bicycles is that they have small diameter wheels, which cause problems on uneven surfaces. The bikes even have shock absorbers promoting a better and smother ride down the lane. They also come with quite a number of adjustments, which surely help you to settle down well on the bike.
How to be folded is indeed significant, but what puts folding bicycles on the top of the list is the fact that they can be easily stored and transported.

BMX Bikes Are For Those Who Like To Live On The Edge - By: Robert Sheehan
BMX Bikes are specially designed bicycles for racing on sandy and hilly tracks. Apart from racing on hilly terrains, bikers also perform tricks on flat grounds, wooden ramps and trails.
Earlier, bikes were manufactured with an assembled frame and fork, with two wheels and a seat. BMX bicycles originated in the state of California in the late 60s, but it was not until the beginning of 1961 that the bikes achieved great popularity. The manufacturers then began to produce these bicycles frequently.
BMX tricks and stunts are now very popular among the teenagers. There are numerous clubs and organizations where people can come to try their hands out on the BMX bicycles and practice the skills and tricks. With these early practices, the young bikers get acquainted with the common problems that may occur during the ramp performances.
Bike tricks are not easy for bikers. The stunts are quite tough to perform and you should undergo tough rehearsals in order to get fully ready. Some of the difficult tricks are like standing on the front pegs, and spinning the rest of the bike around. The skillful bikers can even summersault in the air. It may take lots of practice to master these tricks.
While riding the bicycles you should have ample protection. You must protect your elbows, knees and most importantly your head with the helmet. If you are interested in a look at the toughest BMX competitions, the X games on various sports channels can help you out.
The Designs Of BMX Bicycles
The main features of the bike:
1. Straight tubes
2. Gusseted frames
3. Reinforced handlebars
4. Powerful mag wheels
5. Long crankarms
6. Steel rims
7. Coaster brakes
The bike producers manufacture bikes with light body. The body of this bike is made of aluminum or chromium and molybdenum for frames and steel for the rims. Aluminum is also used for rims, freewheels and caliper brakes. The 24-inch versions of BMX bicycles are called Cruisers.
The frames of these bicycles are made to be very light and maneuvered accordingly, so that it can weather the blows while racing and jumping. Moreover, a light bike can save you precious minutes in a close race.
The tires of BMX bicycles are quite different from the road bikes. They are knobby with excellent traction and power. Another aspect that distinguishes the BMX tires from the others is in the construction of their wheels. Generally the rims are of 20 inches, but there can be different sizes too.
Sometimes the BMX bicycles fall hard and that is why the manufacturers have introduced Cro Moly tube sets to the BMX bicycles. A BMX bike with smaller gear set-ups reduce the weight of the bikes by using chain rings, smaller rear drivers, and shorter chain length.
Sales of these bicycles are much higher than the other ones. Bikes can be seen with every fashionable bike rider, on sidewalks and in their natural habitat. Instead of competing with anyone, a simple ride would be much more comfortable. While riding you have to be very conscious, and should not make too much experiments with your tricks. Do not forget to wear a helmet whenever you are riding.
Thus, the BMX bicycles are both, fashionable and powerful, providing you the ultimate passion for fashionable biking.

Mountain Bikes Are Perfect Hill Heroes - By: Robert Sheehan
Mountain bikes are specially meant for rough and rugged terrains. These extra traction and shock absorbing mountain bicycles are provided with fat knobby tires.
However, a full front and rear suspension is becoming quite a common factor nowadays with bikes meant for mountain rides. Some bikes of this particular variety are fitted with bar ends on the handlebars, but with recent trends the use of handlebars and extensions are becoming less and less popular.
Mountain bicycles have both 26 and 29 inches wheels. The larger wheels of this bike type have better rolling capacities over rocks and boulders. Moreover, wheels, which are larger in diameter, also bring about an enhancement in rotational weight giving way to stable acceleration.
Mountain Bicycles Kings On Rugged Roads
Based on suspension, mountain bicycles are broadly graded into four different kinds:
Bikes with dual or full suspension, These bikes have front suspension fork and rear suspension with a rear shock and linkage that is ready to make the rear wheels move on pivots
Hardtail bikes, These bikes have frames with no rear suspension and they are often supplied with front suspension forks
Soft Tail Bikes, These bikes have frames with small amount of rear suspension. The bikes are activated by flex of the frame rather than the pivots
Fully rigid bikes, These bikes have a sub-type of hardtail along with rigid fork system
The Different Types Of Mountain Bicycles
The Cross-Country Mountain Bike
This bike variety has small amount of suspension on the front or on the rear. These bicycles are comparatively light because they are constructed with lightweight materials both in frame construction and in components.
Some XC bike varieties of this particular type are without any suspension. They make use of rigid front fork that helps in saving weight. Here, the skill of the rider to pass through rough terrains is more important.
Freeride Mountain Bike
These are very similar to enduro bikes and emphasize more on weight and enhanced suspension. These bikes have ample suspension and they are mostly constructed with heavier materials. Freeride bikes are absolutely versatile and they are fantastic for uphill travel. The frame angles of such bikes are usually steeper in comparison to downhill bikes. Most freeride bikes are 30 to 45 pounds in weight.
Trials Mountain Bike
These are trial specific bikes. Most of these bikes are without any suspension. The contemporary trial bikes come without seats as most of the time the rider is out of the saddle. This bike is particularly lighter than other mountain bicycles and it weighs between 15 to 25 pounds. The lightweight makes it easier for the biker to maneuver the bike.
Single-Speed Mountain Bike
This is a kind of mountain bike with one set gear ratio. The ratio of the gear depends on the kind of terrain the bike crosses, the skill and strength of the bike rider and the size of the bike too. A single-speed bike is completely rigid having tough steel frames. If you want to ride a single-speed bicycle on mild to moderate cross-country terrains you have to be strong and active.
North Shore Mountain Bike
North shore mountain bike is genuinely constructed for rough and rugged land surfaces. A rider of this particular bike type has to exhibit lots of skill and balance while riding the bike. This bike is a wonderful combination of freeride and downhill bikes.
The other mountain bike varieties include Enduro Mountain Bike, Downhill Mountain Bike and Dirt Jumping Bike.
Most modern bikes meant for mountains have lighter and stronger frames with innovative design and form. The geometry of these bikes encourages vigorous riding over several obstacles like logs, rocks, wooden bridges and manually fabricated ramps. In the front, the bikes have three gears and it has 7, 8, 9, or 10 gears at the rear wheel position.
Some notable companies who have introduced the latest models of mountain bicycles include Fox, Manitou and Rock Shox along with other significant bike manufacturers. It is quite likely for you to make mistakes while riding a mountain bike. The mishaps generally take place due to equipment failure or misjudgment on the part of the rider.
Thus, several companies have come forward with protective gears referred to as armors to provide full protection from injuries. Some essential upper body protectors for riders include spine protector, full-face helmets and backpack hydration system.
It is quite an established fact that mountain bicycles are aptly designed following the present trend and demand. They are in fact the dream of every spirited and efficient mountain biker.

Dahon Folding Bikes , Setting The Course For Quality - By: Robert Sheehan
If biking is your passion then you must be one of those individuals who are fussy about their machines. Chances are that the convenience and the comfort levels of your bike matter a lot to you. If this be so, then go in for the folding bikes. And in particular, the Dahon folding bikes should be your choice.
What Are Folding Bikes?
Folding bikes are bicycles with a lot of hinges and joints that can be folded up to trim the size of the bike. And with the bicycle frame brought down to a manageably wieldy size, you can carry it around in public transport; have it stashed away in your car or in some corner of your apartment. Folding bikes also do not require much of a parking space, making it easy for you to travel with it.
Folding Bikes From Dahon
Dahon is a name to reckon within the bicycle manufacturing world and the leader in the production of folding bikes. In fact, this Los Angeles-based company is a trailblazer of sorts when it comes to folding bike technology.
The company has perfected the technology and the fact that it has till now sold more than 2 million of these bikes in more than 30 countries is ample testimony to its expertise.
Dahon is never short on ideas when it comes to folding bikes. It has several innovative and groundbreaking bike models to its credit, all hugely popular amongst the biking fanatics.
For instance, you have the Allegro make that has its frame modeled upon the famous Ritchey Logic frame. And you can be rest assured about the quality of the machine because the frame is hand-welded from the Italian-made Ritchey WCS steel tubing. However, the prime allure of this Dahon make is the fact that it can be bundled into a small suitcase in only about 10-15 minutes.
The very popular Ciao P5 folding bike from Dahon is a bikers delight, and especially the rookies, people with back or leg injuries and women wearing flowing dresses.
This stylish bike comes with an assortment of bells and whistles like the Hella lighting system to help you in the dark; SKS mud guards to ensure that the ride does not turn out to be too muddy and also an ArcLight rack to hold your paraphernalia.
Dahon has broken all myths regarding the folding bikes being fragile with its Fuego model. When folded, this pint-sized dynamite is basically a full suspension MTB designed to suit the demands of pro-standard Marathon/Enduro riding. This is a robust bike featuring a double-butted 7005 aluminum frame that also incorporates 4-4.5 inches of front and rear travel suspension, the Patented Interlock Joint Technology and the legendary Joe Murray LSR linkage technology and Threshold Linkage Design. Furthermore, the whole ensemble, elaborate though it may sound, can be packed into an airline suitcase.
Why Go In For A Dahon Folding Bike?
Amidst the plethora of brands jostling for your attention in the market, Dahon has been pretty quick to win the favors from the bikers. And for all the right reasons too.
A constant strive towards perfection and development has meant that Dahon goes in for an extensive R&D regime. It is thus no wonder that the Dahon folding bike comes in so many different forms and designs, all of them rivaling and most times surpassing the best in the market.
Still harping on this issue, Dahon is a trendsetter of sorts, with more than 95% of the currently prevalent folding bike technology being along the lines of the Dahon technology.
Quality is the hallmark of all Dahon bikes. This is because the bike parts are obtained from the very best manufacturers all around the world.
Go in for a Dahon folding bike. You can bask in the thought that you will be taking convenience and comfort along with you in your ride.

Birdy Folding Bike , Your True Compact Travel Companion - By: Robert Sheehan
Launched in the year 1995 by the award winning German design firm Riese and Muller, the Birdy bikes are lauded in the international market because of their innovative design and performance. The revolutionary dual suspension design of a Birdy folding bike introduces that smoothness to each ride that is otherwise characteristic of expensive full-sized bicycles only.
The first fully suspended folding bicycles, the Birdie bikes make use of one-piece solid yet lightweight aluminum frames. The suspension pivots take care of the folding mechanism in the absence of the mainframe hinges. This clever designing together with the use of 18 inch wheels make the bikes very stable and sporty.
The Birdy bicycles fold in less than 30 seconds without the use of any tools. With the folded size of a Birdy bicycle being some 30" x 23" x 11", it is quite easy to store them in small places and carrying cases. The lightweight frames (mostly weighing around 24 lbs) make the Birdy bikes very portable.
The different gearing options, firm framing and dual suspension design of Birdy folding bikes render them suitable for being used for many purposes other than commuting. Use them for pleasure rides and touring as well as for sporting use.

Switch to an electric bicycle – be eco-friendly - By: Electric Bikes
Electric Bicycles are most appropriate for those who do not travel fast and are ideal for children and aged people. With the rising price of petroleum products, electric bikes are a great replacement for transport because electric bikes are battery operated.
There are many advantages of electric bikes such as: the battery of an electric bike has a life time of one to two years and is able of running more than 10,000 miles when it is charged 300 times. The electric bike is not too heavy which is a great advantage for the user.
Nowadays an electric bike might cost the same as a regular bike or it might be a little less expensive. Having an electric bike can save you great money in the long run. When the electric bikes are charged for a couple of hour’s everyday, it would enough for the whole day to travel. On the other hand, electric bikes do not emit any pollution or noise.
Comparing an electric bike with its similar gasoline bike, an electric bike has the advantage of saving you a lot of gas. Also, there is no need for any license or registration for electric bikes. Some electric bikes come with pedals and so, even if the battery runs down, it is possible to ride the bike using pedals only such bikes like Izip electric bikes and the Ezip bikes. People who have to stop frequently and move on the narrow lanes and traffic find electric bikes very helpful.
An electric bike can speed up to around 15 to 20 Miles which is faster than walking. It is possible to control the speed of the electric bike like riding faster on cool days that increases wind chill and maintaining a normal speed on hot days. Thus, by using an electric bike, every one can enjoy the comfort of the bike and be a little eco-friendly.

The Bicycle: From The Streets To The Mountains - By: Victor Epand
In many countries, bicycles are accepted and approved as a means of transport for people of both genders and all ages. Contrarily, very few adults in the United States ride a bike on any kind of regular basis, if ever. Although many children in this country love their bikes more than anything, the magic usually wears off when they reach their teen years. This change is probably a result of America's obsession with motorized transportation, i.e. the automobile. However, over the past decade or so, Lance Armstrong has done an incredible amount to further the "coolness" factor of bicycles in America. This development is all to the good, since bicycles are beneficial to both individuals and to the planet as a whole.
Bicycles were invented in the early 19th century. Interestingly, the bicycle's basic shape has never changed very drastically, although the one exception to this rule is the "penny-farthing" bicycle, the notorious model with a huge front wheel and a tiny rear one. For the most part, the first bicycles are easily recognized as bikes even by today's standards. Early bicycles were used simply as a form of transportation, whether recreational or commercial.
While early bicycles were fairly "one size fits all," modern cyclists have a whole laundry list of bicycle types to choose from. His or her selection is based on the type of cycling he or she intends to pursue. An individual who simply needs to get around the city will purchase a utility bicycle, but someone who enjoys bicycle touring (extended trips taken on a bike) will select a touring bicycle. Each kind of bicycle is designed to meet the challenges associated with the intended use.
Utility bicycles are probably the most common style of bike in the world. They are used by millions of people every day, especially in countries like China, Japan and the Netherlands, for commuting, shopping and basic point-to-point transportation. A utility bike often has a step-through frame, which features a low crossbar, making it easy to mount. This design evolved from the bicycles of the 19th and 20th centuries that were intended for female riders. Because the women of those eras always wore long dresses or skirts, bicycles needed to accommodate such clothing. While this is no longer (usually) a consideration, step-through frames remain popular due to the ease with which they can be mounted. Utility bikes are functional, durable, comfortable and versatile, but they do tend to be rather heavy. The handlebars on these bikes are usually higher than the seat, allowing the cyclist to sit upright.
Mountain bicycles are another extremely well-known type of bicycle. These bikes are designed to contend with unpaved environments such as mountain trails or country roads. They feature wide, knobby tires that provide a great deal of traction and shock absorption. Mountain bicycles usually have diamond frames, which are lighter than step-through frames. These bikes need to be relatively lightweight, as cyclists often need to lift them into trucks or carry them when the trail becomes too rough. The handlebars of mountain bikes are usually at about the same height as the seat, forcing the cyclist to bend at the waist while seated.

How To Ride Your Bicycle Safely - By: John Myre
John was following his doctor's orders. The 50-something executive was taking his daily bicycle ride to improve his health. This evening, though, he altered his routine and opted for a more scenic route along a narrow, winding, two-lane road near his home.
With no shoulders, the road left no margin for error, however, and John was hit by a motorist who was trying to pass him. In trying to prolong his life, John inadvertently cut it short.
Each year, about 500,000 people require emergency room treatment due to bicycle crashes, and about 800 people die. Approximately 75 percent of the deaths result from a head injury. Following are some simple, easy-to-follow guidelines that will keep the pleasure in biking.
Use The Proper Gear
* The proper helmet can reduce head injuries by about 85 percent. Always wear a helmet with a label stating that it meets the Consumer Product Safety Commission standard. Select a helmet that fits snugly and sits flat on your head.
* Discard a helmet after it sustains a blow. Even a slight blow can affect impact-absorbing foam.
* Take a safety course. One organization offering courses for all ages is the League of American Bicyclists at (202) 822-1333 (202) 822-1333 , or their website.
* Know and obey traffic regulations, signs, signals, and markings.
* Ride a bicycle that "fits" your body and riding needs. You should be able to stand over the top tube, with the tube one or two inches below your crotch. Find a qualified salesperson to help you determine which bicycle, safety features, and accessories are best for you.
* Before riding, make sure all the parts are secure and working.
* Check your brakes before stepping onto your bicycle, and keep them properly adjusted.
* Wear bright or fluorescent clothing during the day. Be more visible by flying an orange flag from the back of your bike.
* Never wear headphones.
* Use a rearview mirror.
Take A Balanced Approach
* Find a safe place to ride. Many cities or bicycle clubs have maps of recommended routes.
* Cycle defensively. More than 70 percent of car-bicycle accidents occur at driveways or intersections. Expect a car to pull out from a side street, or turn left in front of you.
* If traffic is heavy, walk your bike across an intersection.
* Make eye contact with drivers, and signal your intentions.
* Cycle with the flow of traffic, and never against it.
* In a group, it's best to ride single file, unless you are off the road, or on quiet, secondary roads.
* Don't carry passengers or items that interfere with your control.
* Stay alert at all times. Look out for hazardous surfaces or obstacles in your path, such as potholes, loose gravel, manhole covers, cracks, railroad tracks, or wet leaves.
* Leave at least three feet of distance when passing parked cars to avoid doors being opened.
* Be predictable. Maintain a straight line when you're cruising.
* Stay at least three feet to the right of cars if you can. If there is a wide, clean shoulder, use it.
* Watch for pedestrians, especially kids or animals that might dart in front of you. If a dog chases you, stop, dismount, and use your bike as a shield.
* Before turning, look back, check all directions for traffic, and use hand signals.
* Avoid provocative actions that might irritate drivers.
* When in danger, shout!
* The bike will be less stable with a child in a seat. A cart towed by a bike is far safer. Plan to go slower, take turns gently, and avoid busy streets.
* Carry loads at the rear of the bike in cases designed for bicycles.
Riding After Dark
* Avoid biking at night. It is far more dangerous than riding during the day. Most bicycles need to be adapted for nighttime use.
* Add the brightest lights and largest reflectors you can find to the front and rear or your bicycle.
* Wear retro-reflective clothes or material, especially on your ankles, wrists, back, and helmet. White or fluorescent are not good enough.
* Ride only in familiar areas. Streets with bright lighting are best.
* Always assume that a driver does not see you.

How to Choose Your Ten Year Old’s First BMX Bicycle - By: Don Alexander
It’s been on my heart to write this article for some time now. This article is written to serve parents everywhere when shopping for their boy or girl’s first BMX bike!
For over 7 years I operated my own bike shop out of my parents home in Mesa, Arizona, Donnie’s Bicycle Shop, and it thrills me to no end to be able to share some key information with you!
First, let’s talk about BMX bike names and where you should or shouldn’t buy your son or daughter’s first bike. You can’t go wrong with Haro. HARO BMX has been around for so long and they keep coming up with new and innovative designs. Also, Diamond Back is trustworthy, lightweight, and again, the company is rock solid. Red-Line BMX is also highly recommended.
Mongoose is my BMX line of choice when purchased from a real bike shop that knows what they are doing. Mongoose has been making BMX bikes that kick everybody’s tails for years, and they make the most beautiful bikes! But your going to have to consult your local real bike shop owner, because you don’t want to buy from Wal-Mart or other chain store. Also, you may want to contact Mongoose directly and request a race-bike BMX catalogue only.
My first BMX bike was a bike called the JAG BMX by Mongoose, and the bike served me well for many years. If you can get ahold of one, it’s sure worth it. My first bike had a glossy cream-orange frame, with white MotoMags. I recommend Motomags. But be careful, no Motomag imitations, and there are a ton of them. The mag has to say Motomag on it.
A word about grips! Today’s BMX bikes are coming out with some of the most uncomfortable grips for the kids’ hands! Have the bike shop owner show you the array of grips available, and to me, a foam style is the best, or a really soft gel rubber is ok too. I always loved the foam grips when jumping because they
absorb the shock of the fall!
Watch out for GT’s Dyno line. The frames on most of them are not as solid and if you don’t believe me, go to your neighborhood thrift store, and you’ll see a ton of GT Dyno’s. I personally would not buy my son or daughter a GT bike, unless it was one of their top of the line models. I also had a problem airborne with them upon landing, when compared to the awesome Mongoose BMX, my dad bought for me at the local bike shop in Mesa.
Buy your child’s bike from a regular bike shop. Do not buy it at Wal-Mart, Target, Costco, or Sam’s Club. These bikes carry the names Schwinn, Mongoose, and more, but let me guarantee you, they are not the real Mccoy!
That said, also watch out for high pressure bike salespeople. Believe it or not, they are out there! If they have such a good product, why do they have to pressure sale you?
Back to brand names. If you are going to buy a Schwinn, Mongoose, or other formerly well-trusted bike, deal with the company directly or a reputable bike shop in the area. You won’t find any Wal-Mart
BMX bikes in your local bicycle shop!
Now, as to hardware! If you’re going to get your son or daughter a bike make sure you invest in ultra lightweight aluminum or chromoly rims. So many bikes out there are being sold with cheap rims and cranksets.
It’s worth the extra one to two hundred dollars to get your child the very best components. They will last longer and your child will have one of the best and baddest BMX bikes on the block!
That said, invest in three piece aluminum cranks or one piece aluminum, titanium, or chromoly or whatever other space-shuttle type of materials they have! Don’t opt-out for regular steel cranks. Get a bike that has a lifetime or at least a twenty year frame warranty.
If you want to buy a vintage BMX bike from e-bay or a local auction, invest in the 1984 Schwinn Sting. That bike is totally bad to the bone man. Any newer versions of the Schwinn Sting should be purchased as well.
Ok, let’s talk about rims. Rims need to be light. So many BMX bikes have heavy bulky rims. Rims should be lightweight alloy. Also, you want to request sealed bearing hubs because they don’t require any maintenance, almost ever, and they make them on the best BMX bikes everywhere.
Also, trust your child. If they love the bike, it’s the bike for them. But let them know you love them enough to request upgrades on the rims, tires, and brakes!
Also, BMX bikes should have mid-range to best brakes.
Get alloy again, or high dollar brakes. This is your child’s safety for goodness sakes! You know how many cheap brakes there are on BMX bikes? You don’t want to know, believe me. I’ve broken several myself over the years!
If the bike offers it, it’s ok to get the standard hub that breaks with their right leg as well, and handbrakes, double the stopping power! Also, out in Mesa, Arizona, I can’t count all the times I’ve fishtailed with my BMX bike with that feature! You may not get that on some of the higher end bikes, but on
many you still will! Ask for both if they have it, the coaster brake style with handbrakes!
Invest in a mid-range helmet, that is ANSI Certified and is labeled by them. Get gloves that are of excellent quality as well. Every BMX bike should have goosekneck, handlebar, and top frame pads, bare minimum, do not let your child take the bike without them.
Frames that are welded should have beautiful thick welds that you’d want to eat off them. Don’t buy any bike with ugly looking welds. Also, watch out for over priced bikes that have beautiful welds but low componentry.
I always like to buy my BMX bikes with similar equipment too! If hubs, cranks, brakes, and so forth are all Shimano, that’s a good thing. The bike is Shimano equipped. I’d steer clear of BMX bikes that have lightweight handlebars, but heavy cranks, hubs, and are made by 10 different companies!
In conclusion, there are only a few key things to remember. Weight. Get the lowest weight rims, hubs, and components that are of the highest quality. It is ok to have a heavier frame, but don’t compromise on wheels, tires, or most of all-brakes! Buy a Haro, Diamond-Back, Red-Line, or Mongoose from a Bike Dealer, and your going to be happy! Don’t buy from the local chain stores anymore, ever! Buy direct from your local bike shop that knows BMX!
Lastly, have fun, and jump! If you can’t jump the bike, don’t buy it. The frames should be cleared for jumping! And remember, most of all, your BMX bike will be a part of your son or daughter’s life for at least 5-7 years, so go ahead, spend a couple hundred more for better components. And remember, to hit a ramp, fly up, hold the bars, kick the rear wheel out, and just hang on, feeling nothing but the air and rising above the earth, on a BMX Bike, is something your child will never ever forget and will pass on from generation to generation.

Customizing Your Bicycle Rims - By: Alastair Hamilton
Barring a serious crash or the most frequent bike accident of all—entering the garage with a bicycle on your car roof rack—your bicycle rims will probably last as long as you can stand riding the same old bike. Usually made of aluminum, rims are lightweight and strong and are hardly ever the source of trouble on a bicycle, even in the most arduous riding conditions.
In fact, most bicycle riders probably never give a single thought to their bicycle rims. The circular band of metal that holds in the bike tire and connects it to the wheel hub via spokes is easily overlooked. Unlike spokes, a bicycle rim hardly ever breaks. Unlike the hub, it hardly ever causes problems. Unlike tires, it never goes flat or explodes. Serious bicycle racers have some pretty fancy rims, full of the same outrageously colorful advertising that covers their clothing usually, but most riders really don't need these. Even the fanciest rims, the flattened out, wide, presumably aerodynamic rims you'll see on the wheels of the pros, are not certainly all that much better. They are, however, flashier, and in the world of bicycling, this apparently does count for something, maybe for intimidation.
Do you need to know anything special about your bicycle rims? Not really. Most bicycles come with rims appropriate to their overall quality. You can spend as much money as you want on a rim—like everything else associated with the sport of bicycling—but what comes standard on a bike is probably sufficient. Customizing your rims will bring you fancier rims, maybe lighter rims, probably stronger rims, but the research on what constitutes the best rim weight, strength and shape is still largely inconclusive, and since this feature causes so few problems to the recreational rider, you can leave this issue to the professional mechanic who services the bicycles of world class racers. When they've resolved the issue, you will know about it!
Meanwhile, if your bicycle rims are aluminum, as most are today (steel rims being heavy, carbon rims being expensive), there is very little you need to do for them. As with all parts of your bicycle, rims should be kept clean of dirt and corrosive oils, wiped after long dusty rides and examined after any crash. Otherwise, do what most riders have always done: forget about your bicycle rims. You may not be able to ride a bike without them, but you really cannot ride a bike better for thinking about this vital but happily innocuous part.
