CANCER (MESOTHELIOMA)

Mesothelioma: Symptoms and Treatment by: Health and Fitness.

Cancerous cells are described as malignant neoplasms. They demonstrate uncontrolled cell growth that follows no physiclogic demand. When an abnormal cell is transformed by the genetic mutation of the cellular DNA, Cancerous cells are formed.

Mesothelioma can either be malignant(cancerous)or benign(non-cancerous) in nature. Mesothelioma affects the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a type of tissue lined with special cells referred to as mesthelial cells. The mesothelial cells typically line the abdominal cavity, heart cavity, chest cavity, and the other surface of most internal organs.

Types of Mesothelioma:

1: Pleural mesothelioma.
2: pericardial mesothelioma.
3: Peritoneal mesothelioma.

Based on the types of cells seen in a mesothelioma patient, mesothelioma can again be categorized into three types:
1: Epithelioid mesothelioma.
2: Sarcomatoid mesothelioma.
3: Biphasic mesothelioma.

Cancerous cells are described as malignant neoplasms. They demonstrate uncontrolled cell growth that follows no physiclogic demand. When an abnormal cell is transformed by the geneticmutation of the cellular DNA, cancerous cells are formed. The cells infiltrate the tissues that surround them and gain access to lymph and blood vessels, which carry to other areas of the body.

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not apear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma diagnosis is often difficult, because the symptons are similar to those of a number of other conditions. A history of exposure to asbestos may increase clinical suspicion for mesothelioma.

Surgical resection has been relied upon because radiation and chemotherapy get hold of been ineffective unequivocal treatments. There are now a number of cancer treatment options open to mesothelioma patients. Extraplural pneumonectomy for selected victims with very early stage disease may expand recurrence-free survival, but the impact it has on overall survival is unknown at this time.

In more extreme cases of Mesothelioma cancer, the Mesothelioma tumor can break through the walls of the organs that it surrounds and cause internal damage to the organ. Also, in some cases the cancer can travel through the blood stream and affect other organs, not directly surrounded by the original Mesothelioma cancerous cells.

There are many mesothelioma treatment options available. Treatments include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy and the mesothelioma treatment depends on the patient's age, general health and stage of the cancer. There has been much mesothelioma research conducted throughout the past two years to find new treatment methods.

The pulmonologist is a physician who specializes in the field that involves the lung. The pleural mesothelioma is the more common form of mesothelioma and this type involves the covering of the lungs. The lung specialist physician has the extensive knowledge and skills and is specifically trained to diagnose and treat diseases that affect the lung such as mesothelioma.

Among the treatments that are used in order to reduce the effects of the disease are oxygen, postural drainage and pain killers. A wide range of treatment approaches are being tested, ranging from attempts to fortify the body's natural immune system to gene therapy which tries to attack the problem at the DNA level. Homeopathy, herbs and acupuncture are also used. But none have yet been shown to be very effective once disease reaches the aggressive stage.
